John Hawkins Don't Mention That Va. Tech Shooter Was ASIAN!

I didn't even know that there was an Asian American Journalists Association, but had I known that it existed, I would have suspected that it was run by liberals like just about every other bastion of mainstream journalism in the country. This release from the AAJA would seem to indicate that my hunch would have been right,

"Like the rest of the nation, we at the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) are stunned at the news of today's shooting at Virginia Tech. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and friends as they cope with this horrific incident.

As coverage of the Virginia Tech shooting continues to unfold, AAJA urges all media to avoid using racial identifiers unless there is a compelling or germane reason. There is no evidence at this early point that the race or ethnicity of the suspected gunman has anything to do with the incident, and to include such mention serves only to unfairly portray an entire people.

The effect of mentioning race can be powerfully harmful. It can subject people to unfair treatment based simply on skin color and heritage.

We further remind members of the media that the standards of news reporting should be universal and applied equally no matter the platform or medium, including blogs."

Oh, so blogs aren't supposed to mention that the shooter was ASIAN. So, why shouldn't I mention that he was ASIAN. He was ASIAN, right? Is there any disagreement that the shooter was ASIAN? No, he's definitely ASIAN, ASIAN, ASIAN, ASIAN, A--S--I--A--N!

Mentioning that he's ASIAN doesn't, "unfairly portray an entire people." How could it? Since when was Cho Seung-Hui elected as the representative of all ASIAN people in America? Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold certainly aren't representatives of all white people, are they?

Besides, are we supposed to knowingly withhold this information from the public? How long should we wait? A week, a month, a year? Should we never mention that the shooter was ASIAN? Give me a break. These AAJA members should stick to real journalism instead of this identity politics garbage. Better yet, all the members of the "Asian American Journalists Association" should quit the group and join a journalists group that isn't based on race.
