John Hawkins Reviewing The Last 10 Videos I Rented

Since it's Friday, it's a little more casual, and I thought I'd do something a little out of the ordinary. So, here are the last 10 movies I've rented from Netflix, in reverse order, and, along with a very short review of each...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2007): I liked the more playful, older Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, so I was disappointed that this one didn't quite measure up to its predecessors. (2 out of 5 stars)

Wilderness (2006): A gritty story about British delinquents who are taken to a deserted island for rehabilitation and are instead hunted and killed. It's an action/horror flick and given that I had never heard of it before I ran across it on Netflix, I was surprised at how good it was. (3.5 out of 5 stars)

The Dead Zone, 1983: This is one of the better adaptations of a Steven King novel, which admittedly, isn't saying much. But, Christopher Walken and a strong plot made this horror/drama work well (3.5 out of 5 stars)

A Force of One, 1979: This felt like a cheesy seventies TV show, which isn't surprising for a seventies movie, and it is not one of the better Chuck Norris movies. (2 out of 5 stars)

300, 2007: The story of 300 Spartans facing off against the hordes of the Persian Empire. I saw this 4 times in the theater and watched it twice on video. It is one of my favorite movies of all-time. (5 out of 5 stars)

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, 2007: A very creative, unusual horror movie about a reporter covering a mass murderer's rampage. It was sort of a cross between Scream and one of the movies that Scream was parodying. (3.5 out of 5 stars)

Doctor Strange, 2007: They should have called it Doctor Boring, because it was really lame and doesn't measure up to the other animated movies Marvel has put out. (2 out of 5 stars)

Pathfinder, 2006: The pitch here is supposed to be Vikings vs. Indians, battling each other to the death, but the movie was so poorly written that it compares unfavorably to the bad in house productions on the Sci-Fi network. This movie has no redeeming qualities. (1 out of 5 stars)

The Tao of Steve, 2000: A surprisingly good movie about a pick-up artist who falls for one of his conquests. (3 out of 5 stars)

The Condemned, 2007: This movie was a takeoff on "Battle Royale," an outstanding foreign flick that featured regular kids put on an island and forced to fight to the death. In this case, the kids were replaced with death row convicts and protagonist Stone Cold Steve Austin served up cans of whup *ss to everything that moved. This has been the best of the movies put out by the WWE, by far (4 out of 5 stars)
