John Hawkins Amnesty Returns From The Grave In The Senate

(This post was originally written yesterday, but it has been carried over. If you haven't called your Senators and told them to oppose cloture on the DREAM ACT, do it now, before the vote later today!)

From NumbersUSA,

Last night, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) filed to invoke cloture on S. 2205, Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin’s (D-Ill.) new stand-alone DREAM Act amnesty bill. The cloture vote, for which 60 YES votes are necessary to prevent a filibuster on the measure, is set for Wednesday, October 24. Reid is attempting to bring this nightmarish amnesty bill to the floor under Senate Rule XIV without it ever having been debated in committee... Click here for more background on the DREAM Act.

It is imperative that NumbersUSA members call their senators today to ask them to vote NO on cloture for S. 2205.

Call your senators today to ask them to oppose the DREAM Act: 202-224-3121.

After getting several emails about this, I picked up the phone and talked to a couple of sources in the Senate.

The first was my favorite source, who always prefers to remain anonymous. He told me, "I think our party learned its lesson after shamnesty." However, he also said the vote count would be close and he didn't know for sure whether the DREAM ACT amnesty bill would pass or not. After talking a bit, we did both agree that any Republican who votes for cloture, after all the havoc the GOP has been through over amnesty this year, is way too dumb to be in politics.

Since he wasn't sure, I picked up the phone and talked to another well placed Senate aide, who also wished to remain anonymous. Originally, he told me that he thought the vote count for the DREAM was at somewhere around 56, 4 short of cloture. But, after checking around a bit more, he said he wasn't sure of that count and like my previous source, he did say it was unknown whether the bill would get 60 votes or not.

On the upside, I have also been able to confirm that Mitch McConnell is opposing this bill and have been told that the Senate Leadership is making efforts to try to keep the bill from getting 60 votes.

In summary, my general sense was that both my sources thought the odds were against the DREAM ACT getting 60 votes, but that there were no guarantees the bill would be stopped.

With that in mind, pick up the phone, tonight or better yet, right now, and call YOUR senators to let them know that you oppose the passage of the DREAM Act. Be polite, be friendly, but make that call. These senators need to be reminded that their constituents do not support amnesty.

You can find all the numbers here.
