"Asked about the National Enquirer story, Edwards says: "That's tabloid trash. They're full of lies. I'm here to talk about helping people."Translation: The story is 100% take-it-to-the-bank true. As Byron York notes, the Enquirer probably paid sources to get the story, but the reporting looks solid. If the account of him being caught in a hotel rendezvous with Rielle Hunter was false, Edwards wouldn't be changing the subject, he'd be suing." -- John Tabin
Bingo!
If the Enquirer made this completely believable story up from whole cloth and John Edwards wasn't visiting his mistress, Rielle Hunter, in her hotel room, he'd be suing them into the ground, not issuing a non-denial denial.
This isn't the sort of airy, unverifiable gossip that you regularly see in the Enquirer and shrug off, it's a Larry Craig style, political career killer. So, if it wasn't true, Edwards would be unleashing his girlish fury at the Enquirer instead of keeping his head down and hoping that the story goes away.
