Anne Rice Leaves Christianity, But Hopefully, Christianity Won’t Leave Anne Rice
Written By : John Hawkins

Famed vampire novelist Anne Rice made some news when she noted on Facebook no less that she was leaving Christianity,

As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.

In a lot of ways, that’s an odd little screed there. If Rice was bothered by the conservative politics of the church she was going to, why didn’t she just change churches? You are allowed to do that, you know =D. I’ve certainly done it more than a few times.

Also, what is “anti-life” even supposed to mean? And anti-Science? Although I’ve run across a few Christians who believe the world is a few thousand years old or who don’t know much about science, I don’t personally know any Christians who are anti-science. In fact, as a general rule, I find that people who claim Christians are “anti-science” tend to be atheists who’ve come to the errant conclusion that you can’t be Christian and pro-science or who falsely believe evolution and Christianity are incompatible. So, that makes me wonder a bit about who has been getting in Rice’s ear.

Then there’s “In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian,” which makes no sense whatsoever. It kind of reminds me of people who say, “I’m spiritual, but not religious.” In other words, despite the fact that’s just something they made up in their heads, they’re hoping God grades on a pass/fail curve and they’re doing just enough to squeak by.

Moving past what Rice wrote, it’s not easy to be a Christian. It sets up a tough standard to live by that conflicts with your own wants and desires. Christianity also conflicts with the secular world. If your values are largely in tune with the non-Christians around you, honestly you’re probably not a very good Christian. Most people aren’t, by the way — myself included.

EVERY Christian fails to live up to his values, ends up being a hypocrite at times, and just plain old falls short of being how he should be as a human being. Then you mix in the people who are using Christianity for their own ends, the people who are caged by dogma to such an extent that they can’t see humanity, people with more zeal than compassion, and all the stupidity, rudeness, and foolishness that marks all large scale human endeavors, and things can really get messy.

But, that makes me think of quotations from my two favorite Christian writers, Rick Warren & C.S. Lewis:

The church is a hospital for sinners, not a hotel for saints. — Rick Warren

If I, being what I am, can consider that I am in some sense a Christian, why should the different vices of those people in the next pew prove that their religion is mere hypocrisy and convention? — C.S. Lewis

There was only one perfect man who walked the earth. The rest of us have to just muddle along, knowing we’re doomed to come up short of His standard. I hope this is just a bump in the road for Anne Rice and she’ll keep on doing that. The same goes for anyone else having a crisis of faith or who even wants to become a Christian. Get on the path, start walking, and expect lots of twists, turns, and frustrations. But, also expect to be a better person at the end, when you go on to your reward, than you were when you started.

Wait, I'm confused. Wasn't it just a few years ago that she went back to Christianity?

    • Mr. EMT

sometime around 5 years ago I think?
I heard the news of her conversion with the announcement of a new project for her, the “lost years” of Christ.
I remembered thinking, at least she wont be using Him for vampire bait this time hopefully? Or maybe she is trying to make up for using Him for vampire bait.

There is a HUGE difference between Faith and Religion and too many people(including the obviously confused Miss Rice) don't know the difference.
I can't say for sure, but after reading some of her posts, I am led to believe that she never actually made the commitment that is necessary.

Her rant absolutely reeks of submission to peer and media pressure from anti-Christian liberal groups.

Most of what she says doesn't even make sense. The Catholic Church is actually far more scientifically progressive than people realize. The bulk of Christianity isn't “anti-birth control”, and there are a lot of gay-neutral or even friendly churches.

More likely than any coherent decision made due to thought or introspection, she got pissed because she got made fun of one too many times for believing and found it easier to just say f-it rather than stand up for herself. I hope she finds the strength to do that one day.

“expect to be a better person at the end, when you go on to your reward, than you were when you started.”

Pasquale's Wager. Interesting in relation to God, Christianity and I've mentioned it to alcoholics who don't believe in the twelve steps.

Humanity is flawed, about that there is no doubt. Christians are humans and not perfect, and we just strive to be perfect. Yet as humans we sometime try to make our 'human' wishes and desires fit the desires of Christ, and in doing so we often make pronouncments of right and wrong based upon those human desires. Try to fit our round peg into the square hole of God's absolute, if you will. (It causes us to look like hipocrits more often than not.) Sadly, sometimes the reaction for not being able to fit humanity into Christianity is to point fingers at other Christians and disavow Christ. One would do well to remember the old saw about not being able to have ones cake and eat it too. Sin is sin. Just cause we like some sins and hate others don't mean we get to pick and choose. Remember, too, we are not to judge for we are all sinners. See, Christianity is very personal. We have a personal responsibility to Christ, not to man. When in doubt about what's right or wrong for you, you need to check the rule book (the Bible), and quite worrying so much about what the other guy says.

Rice's departure from Christianity seems as sudden and abrupt as her rediscovery of her Catholic faith some years back. She also has a history of lashing out on the Internet and, frankly, is rumored by many who knew her in New Orleans back in the day to be something of a … well, a not nice person.

Some may remember her two-post rant on Amazon.com lashing out at fans who panned her then newest book.

Who knows what she really means. If she's doing this in the name of Christ, perhaps her intention is to indicate a break with organized Christianity, rather than her faith? I have no idea. I'm just guessing.

The fact that God's Word conflicted with her own belief system tells me she was never converted to Christ. The parable of the sower of the seed is illustrated with Miss Rice. Some seed (the seed being the Word of God) fell among rock and had no root. when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word's sake, immediately they stumble.

Just read her Facebook page and I am not surprised. Anything mentioned that had any ideological bent was left of center, almost all the links were to New York Times. Heck, the woman thinks that Frank Rich is brilliant. If that is not delusional, I don't know what is.

The whole Christianity thing seemed way out of character for her, and looks like it didn't take. No surprise, really… Being Christian and being lefty is not an easy mix and sooner or later something had to give.

I'm reminded of the bit in the Bible about Jesus preferring us to be hot or cold rather than lukewarm. And I'm also reminded of King David sleeping with his war buddies' wife, and then arranging a conspiracy with a general to assasinate a guy David had fought shoulder to shoulder with.

As to the seed, well, I think the seed had life, and so does the person. I knew one guy who in his testimony said…I got saved thinking about it along the railroad tracks adn thought I had to walk into church to do it, so I did, and then I walked out, and looked up to Heaven and said 'God, thank you very much, now I'll live my own life'. He then said the next five years of his life were the most miserable years he'd ever had.

As to Evolution, sure you can be a Christian and believe in Evolution. You should bear in mind that Evolution's Leaders hate Christianity, tho'. And you might want to actually check out the real science rather than the constant drip-drip brainwashing supported by loads of frauds and bad logic and gov't cheese….you might find like most of the great scientists of history that Special Creationism makes the most sense.

That's the problem with celebrity Christians. Too many of us get all excited when they jump on board before we find out if there's any substance to their conversion.

The rant is typical anti-Christian propaganda. As a Christian, I don't hate homosexuals. My best friend in college was a homosexual. I hate homosexuality. I hate sin because it destroys people's lives, and I love people. To say I should be indifferent to someone's homosexuality if I really loved the homosexual is like saying that I should be indifferent to cancer if I really loved the cancer patient.

And how can one be pro-Christian and not be anti-secular humanism? The two are pretty much diametrically opposed. It's like saying that you're pro-communist and also pro-free enterprise.

As to Christianity being anti-science, I suppose she's thinking of all those anti-science Christian wackos like Isaac Newton, Louis Pasteur, Werner von Braun, Gregor Mendel, …

  • Danny Carlton

She can't leave something she obviously never understood in the first place. She like other “Oprah Christians” aren't true Christians, they just like playing with the term to make themselves feel better, without ever embracing what it really stands for.

  • guest

You know you are done in fame when you have to quit something you hate just to get noticed.

No shocker. Anyone that comes out to claim they are something, and say so loudly and proudly, and then don't profit from it or alter the testament of the faith they supposedly align themselves to, they end up having a hissy.

For once, Anne Rice, be yourself and not an attention-grabbing shill with no talent in the wading pool.

  • Tcuccia

Rice is an old screwball and always has been.
She is fascinated with the dark and the perverse and has NEVER been a Christian in any sense.

    • Christopher_Taylor

Well, I don't know Ann Rice's soul but her confession certainly seems at odds with what the Bible teaches.

  • Lucas

a better case is rarely found to exemplify the maxim: “if you don't know what you stand for, you will fall for anything”

I'm sure all these things she refuses to be against sound good… and probably feel good, and in supporting them she probably feels like a more accepting person, making her in turn feel like a better person. But, in the end they all fall short of having any substance on a moral scale, since almost all of them are opposed to any moral scale, and often use the argument “who are you to say I can't be ______ (insert gay, feminist, humanitarian, Unitarian, right, different, unique, etc”. Lets be honest, if you want to deny Christ because you don't see yourself in need of salvation, fine. I have no qualms with that… but call it what it is. But it only makes one look intellectually toddler-ish to deny Christianity on moral grounds (or on a “I couldn't live with myself anymore” argument) in order to support activities that have no grounds to be called moral by their own scale, and are often defended by bluring right and wrong into something resembling relative ethics.

  • Clemsnman

So, do we have to stone her now?

Oh, sorry. That's the “religion of peace”.

  • aspacia

When Rice turned Christian, the quality of her work was diminished. Actually, I do understand her points, especially her concern with embyonic stem cell research and gays.

Sorry bloggers, but embryonic research may prove beneficial, and gays have made huge contributions to humanity, Turing comes to mind.

    • Coy

Real research has proven that embryonic stem cells have no advantages over other stem cells and as a matter of fact, have been less successful than cells from a person's own DNA. Once again life is sacred – the life is in the blood. Which Rice is infatuated with……

      • aspacia

Currently, you are correct regarding embryonic stem cell research, however this may change.

Life is sacred? Why do we drop bombs if life is sacred?

Actually, Anne's mother was an alcoholic and often said “It's in the bood.” Hence, Anne's facination with blood.

  • Bgirardo

I'll never purchase another book by this author. Sorry.

  • Brokenhearted

I dont know what y'all have run into, but the people that are supporting her VICIOUS! I think Rice is behaving just as she says she doesnt want to. She's saying she doesnt like Christians because supposedly ALL Christians dont like what she does. Is that not bigotry in definition? ANd she's already spreading that hate around, as if you confront anyone that supports her and ask about this illogic rational they get wicked and vicious!
