If Obama Wants To Persecute The Catholic Church…
…Republicans would have to be complete idiots to let that opportunity pass us by.
It’s amazing to me to hear people, who obviously have no political instincts whatsoever, saying that we should just shrug our shoulders when Barack Obama is going on an unconstitutional, anti-Christian jihad against the Catholic Church.
Guess what? The Catholic Church has a constitutional right to the free exercise of religion and unquestionably, forcing it to provide abortions and birth control violates its First Amendment rights.
Moreover, we’re not Libertarians. There are three legs to the conservative stool in the Republican Party: Fiscal issues, social issues, and a strong foreign policy. Given the poor state of our nation’s finances, that has quite properly gotten the majority of the attention, but social issues are extremely important as well and Republicans who don’t understand that don’t deserve conservative support when they run for office.
Furthermore, this isn’t a “culture war” that conservatives are starting. This is Barack Obama stupidly screaming “You can go to Hell” at the Catholic Church. All we have to do is say, “We disagree with Barack Obama and his brand new bigoted, anti-Christian, anti-Catholic policies will not stand if a Republican is elected.”
In 2008, Obama won the Catholic vote, which is 27% of the electorate, by 9 points. Given that every last Catholic Bishop in the United States opposes Obama’s decision, I see no reason we couldn’t reverse those numbers in 2012 AND drive higher Christian turnout at the same time.
From a purely political perspective, this may be the single biggest unforced error that Barack Obama has made in his entire presidency.
Does that mean that we make the entire election about this issue? No, but we should make it crystal clear that unlike the Democrats under Obama, we’re a Christian-friendly party and the GOP is not going to violate the 1st Amendment rights of Catholics.
