Jesus Didn’t Call For Socialism
One thing I can’t help but notice about politics is that conservatives and liberals have a very different approach to Christianity. Conservatism is generally friendly to Christianity, while liberalism is actively hostile towards it. Attacking Christianity is frowned upon amongst conservatives, while it happens so often with liberals that they don’t even bat an eye when it occurs. Conservatives often promote Christianity for its own sake, while on the other hand, I’m not sure if I’ve heard a liberal bring up Christianity for any reason other than to attack it or to twist it around in order to promote some left-wing social program. Here’s a great example of that in action.
President Obama offered a new line of reasoning for hiking taxes on the rich on Thursday, saying at the National Prayer Breakfast that his policy proposals are shaped by his religious beliefs.
Obama said that as a person who has been “extraordinarily blessed,” he is willing to give up some of the tax breaks he enjoys because doing so makes economic, and religious sense.
“For me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’s teaching that for unto whom much is given, much shall be required,” Obama said, quoting the Gospel of Luke.
Obama wants to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire for the richest Americans, and he has embraced the idea that wealthy Americans should not be paying a lower effective tax rate than those in the middle or lower classes.
…”I know that far too many neighbors in our country have been hurt and treated unfairly over the last few years,” Obama said. “And I believe in God’s command to love thy neighbor as thyself. I know a version of that golden rule is found in every major religion and every set of beliefs.”
This is a phony politically-motivated argument. If Jesus wanted a minimum wage, crushing taxes on the rich, or socialism, he would have said that. What Barack Obama is actually trying to do here is twist the Bible around to do exactly the OPPOSITE of what Jesus preached.
“Unto whom much is given, much shall be required.”
“Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
Those are PERSONAL responsibilities. Those responsibilities can’t be fulfilled by empowering some government agency to take someone else’s money and give it to constituent groups you think will vote for you. That’s not living up to the Bible; that’s deliberately twisting the word of God for your own purposes.
That’s not Christianity; it’s immorality.
Now, I’m not saying Jesus would tell you to vote Republican or support a flat tax either. What I am saying though is that no one should trust anyone who never seems to have a kind word for Christians or the Good Lord unless he’s trying to use it to make some kind of political talking point.
