New York City About To Burn Over “Piss Christ”
Andres Serrano’s insulting “art,” ‘Piss Christ,’ which features a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine is about to go on display in New York City.
Andres Serrano’s work – a “photograph of the crucifix submerged in the artist’s urine” – first ignited controversy in 1989 when D’Amato complained to the US Senate that it was an “outrage,” an “indignity” and
a “piece of trash” that had been funded by taxpayers. Serrano had won a $15,000 prize for his work, backed in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
…But the piece – which will be on display as part of a retrospective of the New York artist’s work at Edward Tyler Nahem gallery beginning Thursday – is still causing controversy over two decades later.
On Palm Sunday last year, 1,000 protesters marched outside a French gallery showing “Piss Christ,” and the piece was attacked by hammer-toting vandals while gallery workers received death threats. The piece – there are 10 prints – has also been vandalized at the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia and in Sweden.
…Serrano is working on a book of 400 photographs recently shot in Cuba. His mother, who was born in Florida, is of Cuban heritage. “It’s about time we talked about Cuba,” he said, calling the US embargo “horrendous.”
Obviously, true believers will rally to the Cuban Embassy and government buildings in New York, where they’ll launch assaults and burn the buildings to the ground — and that’s just in New York. All across the planet, we can expect riots over this outrage. Obviously then, the chief of police in NYC will need to call the museum and ask them to take the art down to keep from offending anyone and the military will need to call Serrano and ask him to stop showing the artwork for the good of the country. Liberals will then need to call for Serrano’s arrest and the criminalization for blasphemy while politicians like Barack Obama apologize for the existence of such blasphemy. Governments around the world will then rise up and demand that the United States arrest Serrano and change the First Amendment to prevent anything like this from happening again…oh wait, these are Christians right?
Sorry, wrong religion. Nevermind.
Even though my father, brother, uncles and grandfather were in the military, I seldom handled guns growing up. That’s because unlike many of the other people in my family, I’ve...Read More
