Russell Brand: Muslim Who Beheaded Soldier For Allah Didn’t Do It Because Of Islam

Having read his autobiography, I can tell you that Russell Brand is not the sharpest tool in the shed. He’s a big, goofy, out-of-control drug addict who had just enough talent and likability to become famous despite a lifetime of complete idiocy. So while it’s tempting to write off Russell Brand’s commentary as the ramblings of an idiot, it’s worth noting that this type of thinking has been entirely embraced by the Left not just in Britain, but in this country.

woolrich Islam[1]

Just to set the stage, Brand is referring to the Woolrich attack in Britain. Two Islamic terrorists, connected to Al-Qaeda, attacked a soldier in the street, beheaded him and then hung around talking until the police showed up. They explicitly said that they murdered the soldier because of Islam[2], “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you.”

Here’s Russell Brand’s take[3] on that murder.

Perhaps a bit glibly (but what isn’t glib in 140 characters) I put: “That bloke is a nut. A nut who happens to be Muslim. Blaming Muslims for this is like blaming Hitler’s moustache for the Holocaust.”

…In my view that man’s severely mentally ill and has found a convenient conduit for his insanity – in this case the Koran.

In the case of another mentally ill and desperate man – Mark Chapman – it was The Catcher In The Rye.

This was the nominated text for his rationalisation of the murder of John Lennon in 1980.

I’ve read that book and I’ve read some of the Koran, and nothing in either of them has compelled me to do violence.

….After my Hitler tweet I got involved in a bit of back and forth with a few people who said stuff like: “The murderer said himself he did it for Islam.”

Although I wouldn’t dismiss what he’s saying entirely, I think he forfeited the right to have his views received unthinkingly when he murdered a stranger in the street.

Someone else regarding my tweet said: “Hitler’s moustache didn’t invent an ideology that sanctions murder.”

That is thankfully true but Islam, when practised by normal people, is not an advocacy for violence.

“People all over the world are killing in the name of Islam,” someone added.

But this is the most tricky bit to understand.

What I think is that all over our country, all over our planet, there are huge numbers of people who feel alienated and sometimes victimised by the privileged and the powerful, whether that’s rich people, powerful corporations or occupying nations.

They feel their interests are not being represented and, in many cases, know their friends and families are being murdered by foreign soldiers.

…To demonstrate defiance in the face of this sad violence we must be loving and compassionate to one another.

Let’s look beyond our superficial and fleeting differences.

The murderers want angry patriots to desecrate mosques and perpetuate violence.

How futile their actions seem if we instead leave flowers at each other’s places of worship.

Let us reach out in the spirit of love and humanity and connect to one another.

Perhaps we will then see what is really behind this conflict, this division, this hatred – and make that our focus.

Most Muslims wouldn’t dream of cutting a guy’s head off in the streets and like the rest of us, they’re appalled by what happened. However, if you conclude there are just a few nuts out there that are causing the problem, you’re missing the all too sad reality that there are probably hundreds of millions of “Islamic nuts” across the planet who would applaud what those two terrorists did. In some countries, they probably make up a MAJORITY of the populace and they would be more interested in subjugating or beheading you than “connecting” with you.

Writing off people like the Woolrich killers as “nuts” is comforting to liberals like Russell Brand because it allows them to sidestep the problem entirely and write it off to poverty, people feeling “powerless” or the other standard nonsense liberals embrace when they want to avoid painful realities. Of course, the world is full of people who are powerless or poor who don’t fly planes into the World Trade Center or murder people.

Trying to make the distinction between the cancer that is radical Islam and most Muslims, who are good and decent people, is difficult work. It’s easier to just stick your head in the sand and pretend that murder, mayhem and barbarity don’t follow Islam wherever it goes. But, when you do that, people die as a result. They die in Britain, they die in the United States and they die all over the world because it’s too painful for liberals like Russell Brand to deal with reality.
