Boehner Squeaks By, Takes Revenge on Conservative Opposition
The important thing is never to despair, even as we watch liberal RINOs squander last November’s historic election gains and knife the GOP’s conservative base in the back yet again. At least we can console ourselves that some Republicans rebelled against Obama collaborator John Boehner…
In the end, their rebellion was not enough to unseat Boehner: The speaker won on the first round with 216 votes, 11 more than he needed. But it was far larger than a similar coup attempt against Boehner in 2013. In fact, it was the largest rebellion by a party against its incumbent speaker since the Civil War.
After he won, Boehner entered to a standing ovation and gave a speech calling this Congress to work together and end its gridlock. He finished with a stirring, though epically mixed, metaphor.
“So let’s stand tall and prove the skeptics wrong,” Boehner said. “May the fruits of our labors be ladders our children can use to climb to the stars.”
Lewis Carroll, a pioneer in the genre of literary nonsense, couldn’t have put it better.
Now Boehner sounds like the Queen of Hearts from Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as he turns his attention to conservative rebels and screams, “Off with their heads!”
After he secured his third term as speaker Tuesday afternoon, losing 25 votes on the House floor to some relatively unknown members of the Republican Conference, Boehner moved swiftly to boot two of the insurgents from the influential Rules Committee. That could be just the start of payback for the speaker’s betrayers, who might see subcommittee chairmanships and other perks fall away in the coming months.
Florida Representatives Daniel Webster and Richard Nugent made the trip to the guillotine. They won’t be the last.
The House Republican leadership is carefully reviewing the list of members who voted against the speaker and those who opposed a procedural motion in December on the so-called “crominibus,” the $1.1 trillion spending package to keep the government open through to September. Top Republican sources suggested that the process could take months to unfold.
CRomnibus is the unforgivable sellout by which Boehner agreed to fund ObamaCare and Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty decree, and keep the nation on course toward bankruptcy by irresponsibly allowing the debt to continue to explode.
The smug complacency that characterized the Republican establishment when it controlled both houses under W and ruined the GOP brand with wasteful spending has returned.
“We don’t need these fringe guys [i.e., conservative Congressmen] as much as we did anymore [thanks to the large majority handed to them by conservative voters],” said a GOP leadership aide, speaking on condition of anonymity [lest he be tarred and feathered by those same voters]. “We can let them walk on certain bills, and it just won’t matter. That gives us breathing room.”
By “breathing room,” he means the sort of “flexibility” Obama promised Putin (through Medvedev) he would have after being reelected.
It didn’t need to be like this. The revolt might have succeeded —or at least the vote could have been closer, sending a louder message. As with the party as a whole and the country as a whole, it was betrayed from within. Via Doug Ross, these six freshman congresscritters broke word by voting for Boehner:
Remember the arrogance with which liberal statists posing as conservatives have lied to your faces.
Europe is dying because the major parties, both “center left” and “center right,” are devoted to the same liberal agenda, leaving the population defenseless (for now) against creeping socialism and Islamic colonization. We can’t let the same thing happen here. Once taking the GOP back from progressives is confirmed to be a lost cause, it will be time to let it die by voting third party. Depending on the presidential candidate, 2016 may not be too soon.
