Well, this is unexpected news. Ohio Republican and Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner has announced that he is not just resigning from the Speaker’s chair he is resigning[1] from Congress by October!

Sources inside the Speaker’s office say that he actually wanted to retire last year but when Virginia’s Eric Cantor lost his election throwing the leadership into a tizzy, he thought he’d better put it off. Cantor was second in line of leadership in the House at the time, so his loss supposedly upset the Speaker’s plan to step down.

Boehner has been under increasing pressure for not fighting for Republican ideas and for bending over backwards for the liberal-run Senate and President Barack Obama. There have been growing moves to depose Boehner and have someone like the more conservative Kevin McCarthy (R, CA) run against him for the position. If he’d have lost his chair, an internal fight like that, it would have been quite an embarrassment for the party.

Boehner aides said that one of the reasons he is quitting is to protect the party from a prolonged, contentious battle for leadership.
