Let’s Be Friends: Sharron Angle’s Media Strategy A Lot Like Democratic Media Strategy

Carl Cameron thinks Sharron Angle is naive. I think Sharron Angle thinks like a Democrat: Expect good media coverage, tell the media what you want to talk about, and by golly! expect friendly coverage!

Elizabeth Crum, of the National Review Online, reports from Las Vegas the exchange between Carl Cameron and Nevada Senate hopeful Sharron Angle (she’d be replacing Harry Reid):

Angle: “We needed to have the press be our friend.”

Cameron: “Wait a minute. Hold on a second. To be your friend…?”

Angle: “Well, truly—”

Cameron: “That sounds naive.”

Angle: “Well, no. We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported.”

Cameron: [speechless, laughs]

Now, a lot of people will see this clip and think she’s naive. And I say pish posh! Sharron Angle is as optimistic and hopeful as any Democrat running for office. Why shouldn’t she have guide the media? They love to be guided.

One small problem: Sharron Angle doesn’t seem to realize that she’s a Republican. That sort of chummy media relationship does not work so well for Republicans. In fact, Journolistas pretty much hate anything and anyone standing in the way of their “progressive” (see socialist) agenda, and Sharron Angle stands between them, and their fearsome leader Harry Reid. So, this approach may not work so well.

So if I were advising Sharron, I’d recommend that she keep her sunshiny attitude, but be ready to be disheartened. Carl Cameron is incredulous. Journolistas will be downright hostile to her friendship overture–which is their loss. She seems like a genuinely nice woman.

Dan Riehl goes after NRO for not standing with a conservative:

Yes, I can see the eye-rolls inside the beltway. I get that. But I don’t know as it’s helpful for NRO did headline – Did she just say that? Yeah, said it, okay? How about getting off the sidelines, realizing she’s one of us and adding a little context with a more positive spin?

For all intents and purposes, Sharron Angle seems normal and is probably going to run like a human being, not the latest polyester clone of some GOP consultant. Granted, it’s different. But who knows how it plays in Nevada? Also, if Reid and the media beat on her too harshly for it, it could backfire. It’s her campaign to run, not NRO’s, whether the reporterette’s from Nevada, or not!

Here’s the thing: Sharron Angle is infinitely better than Harry Reid. Republicans and conservatives should be supporting her. I’m not sure, though, is NRO conservative anymore?
