Ted Cruz: GOP Senators Privately Yelled at Me at the “Top of Their Lungs” Because I Fought Gun Control

When Jim DeMint was in the Senate, conservatives would be publicly singing his praises while privately, his staff would tell me that Republicans in leadership were chewing him out behind closed doors for taking a principled stand that embarrassed them.

Now, Ted Cruz is apparently catching the same kind of flack for fighting against gun control. Here’s what he had to say about it.

I don’t know that there is an issue that has generated more heat internally in the Republican conference. We’ve had probably 5 or 6 lunches with a bunch of Republican Senators look at Rand and Mike (Lee) and me and yelling at us at the top of their lungs. I mean, REALLY upset. They said, “Look, why did you do this? As a result of what you did, when I go home my constituents are yelling at me that I gotta stand on principle. (Laughter in the room)

I’m really not making that up. I don’t even bother to argue with them. I just sort of let ’em yell and say, “Look, ya know, vote your conscience.”…

…Look, there are a lot of people that don’t like to be held accountable. But here was their argument: They said, “Listen, before you did this, the politics of it were great. The Dems were the bad guys, the Republicans were the good guys, now we all look like a bunch of squishes. (Laughter in the room)

Well, there is an alternative. You could just not be a bunch of squishes. (Laughter in the room)

The players may change, but it sounds like it’s still the same old, same old in the Senate.
