Megan Rapinoe Protests ‘Racist’ National Anthem Again Suffering The Consequences

The sport most associated with the National Anthem protests is the NFL. Everyone has heard of football players kneeling in protest of police brutality, but they aren’t the only ones. These protests have taken place in college sports and in other sports besides just football. But while the NFL has given its approval for players to kneel, other sports aren’t as thrilled. Soccer, basketball and baseball comes to mind.

Megan Rapinoe became the first white American athlete to take a knee during the National Anthem in order to show solidarity with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick of the NFL, who took a knee to protest racial inequality and police brutality. I doubt she even understands fully what she is kneeling for. Rapinoe said that the decision to kneel and support Kaepernick wasn’t a hard one, and that his message would resonate even more if it came from her too.

Megan Rapinoe is a member of the United States Women’s Soccer Team. But unlike the NFL, U.S. Soccer is not pleased and they let her know it. The organization quickly released a statement condemning the action and demanded that both players and coaches stand during the National Anthem. There was no room for argument on the matter and the players were warned.

Rapinoe arrogantly did not listen or honor the wishes of the team. She’s defied them repeatedly. During a game against the Netherlands, on September 18th, she knelt. And while she claims she is protesting oppression and injustice in the United States, that argument did not sway U.S. Soccer. “As part of the privilege to represent your country, we have an expectation that our players and coaches will stand and honor our flag while the National Anthem is played,” a statement from the organization read. I think that is pretty darn clear. I don’t care how good she is. If she disrespects the National Anthem and her country, she needs to go.

But Rapinoe has continued to express her support for the movement, tweeting and retweeting her opinion. And she will probably pay the price for it. She’s also not a fan of President Trump who has been very vocal against those kneeling during the National Anthem: “His comments are disgusting,” Rapinoe said. “They’re un-American, to say the very least. It’s totally inappropriate, it’s un-presidential, it’s embarrassing. For the President of the United States to say that is just crazy. It’s completely insane and, unfortunately, something we’ve come to expect.”

So far, U.S. Soccer has not chosen to take action against Rapinoe. But ESPN reported that they will re-evaluate if she continues her protest, kneeling during the National Anthem. They should let her go. She made her choice when she chose between social justice and her country. Fans were not happy with Rapinoe’s actions either, shouting “Stand up!” at her during the game against the Netherlands. I would not be surprised if they start to boycott soccer in response to this.

But Rapinoe says that she will continue to kneel, even if it means she will be suspended from U.S. Soccer. “As of now I plan to keep kneeling,” she said during an interview with ESPN. “I’m trying to kind of formulate a better plan and an action step moving forward. But until then, this is how I can help, this is how I can use my voice going forward, and this is how I can be an ally in this space.” Good. Suspend her and grant her wish and she can then use her voice full time to protest somewhere else.

And she also argued that she thinks it’s important that her actions are coming from a white person. “It was really important for that message to come from someone who looks like me,” she said to the BBC. “Everyone who has a pair of eyes in this country understands the racial tensions and the issues we have are very serious and they’re not going away. If we want to be proud to be from a country like America and all the things that we hang our hats on like diversity, equality, land of the free and home of the brave, it’s everybody’s responsibility to ensure that everyone in the country is being afforded the same rights.” Racism is still racism even if you are white and do it. This woman is a useful idiot for racists, social justice warriors and communists. Kick her off the team and good freaking riddance.
