A group of soldiers who were stationed with a NATO training mission at Camp Eggers in Kabul, Afghanistan were among the viewers, linked in live via satellite as Underwood sang. Some of the players on the field were visibly moved by her fiery performance, which MTV termed “stellar.”
The country superstar shared pictures from that memorable day in a post to Facebook a few days before the Super Bowl in 2016.

Super Bowl XLIV featured the New Orleans Saints squaring off against the Indianapolis Colts on Feb. 7, 2010. The game took place at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., and ended with the Saints defeating the Colts 31-17. Legendary rockers the Who provided the halftime entertainment, and it fell to Underwood — one of the most powerful vocalists in any genre of contemporary music — to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which is widely considered one of the most difficult songs to sing due to its enormous range.
