Dem Congresscritter Wants to Fix Economy With Mandated Vacations

Here[1]‘s a sterling example of how Democrats opportunistically respond to our economic problems with intrusive coercion wrapped in free goodies:

Policy makers in Washington, D.C., have been desperately seeking ways to lift the U.S. economy out of its worst slump since the Great Depression. Enter first-term House Democrat Alan Grayson of Orlando, who says it’s as easy as making companies provide paid vacation to employees. Brilliant! Only, it’s not.

Mr. Grayson’s office said his proposal would “help rejuvenate the American economy” by improving productivity and generating more business for the U.S. travel and tourism industries once everyone has so much free time on their hands.

By this logic, so would a requirement that businesses give free airline tickets to their employees, but that doesn’t mean it’s a reasonable burden to impose on employers. It’s hard to think of a worse time to hit them with a new mandate.

Needless to say, the actual consequence of forcing businesses to provide more opulent benefits during a severe recession will be to discourage them from hiring employees, if not to drive them out of business — thus creating more dependency on the government.

They say not to attribute to malice what can be ascribed to incompetence, but if the left were as incompetent as it seems, how did it seize control of the media, academia, and now the government?
