Educators have taken it upon themselves to police children’s lunches, perhaps emboldened by Michelle Obama’s healthy lunch initiative. But not all parents are thrilled about it — one Colorado mother was furious to find that her four year-old daughter wasn’t allowed to eat the lunch she packed for her and all for one ridiculous reason.
Leeza Pearson’s daughter Natalee goes to The Children’s Academy in Aurora, Colorado. One day, Pearson sent Natalee to school with a sandwich, some string cheese and Oreo cookies. Natalee was not allowed to eat her lunch and the school sent a letter home shaming Pearson for the “unhealthy” lunch.
John Hawkins's book 101 Things All Young Adults Should Know is filled with lessons that newly minted adults need in order to get the most out of life. “Dear Parents,” the letter began. “It is very important that all students have a nutritious lunch. This is a public school setting and all children are required to have a fruit, a vegetable and a healthy snack from home, along with a milk. If they have potatoes, the child will also need bread to go along with it. Lunchables, chips, fruit snacks, and peanut butter are not considered to be a healthy snack. This is a very important part of our program and we need everyone’s participation.”
Pearson was furious and quickly spoke to the media about her frustration. “I think it is definitely over the top, especially because they told her she can’t eat what is in her lunch,” she said. “They should have at least allowed to eat her food and contacted me to explain the policy and tell me not to pack them again.”
She also pointed out that the school gives kids in after-school care jelly beans and asks students to bring candy to school to celebrate Easter.
“They say I can’t decide what to feed her but then they sometimes feed her junk food. Why am I being punished for Oreos when at other times I am asked to bring candy?” she asked. “She is not overweight by any means and I usually try to feed her healthy. It’s not like I was offering cookies to the entire class and it’s not like that was the only thing in her lunch.”
What would you do if your child’s teacher did this?
