North Korea To Fire Missile Towards Hawaii? Where’s Obama?

Admittedly, North Korea is a sticky situation. You have a mentally unbalanced, potentially violent dictator running a non-functional, impoverished Hermit Kingdom. This thug has a fairly large army, nuclear weapons, which he first developed during the Clinton years, and enough artillery aimed at South Korea’s capital city to level Seoul to the ground.

Complicating matters, the South Korean people are unreasonably sympathetic towards the North — and China not only likes having North Korea poking a thumb in our eye, they are terrified that North Korea could collapse and they could end up with millions of unwanted Norks that they’d have to feed, shelter, and clothe.

Worse yet, Kim Jung-Il thinks like a gangster. He doesn’t look at the sorry state of North Korea and think, “Gee, I better open up the country, allow free trade, and promote capitalism,” he thinks, “I need to intimidate more people into giving me things.”

All this belligerence, all this hype about the NORKS being afraid that the US is going to invade is mostly bluster. The Korean War has been over for more than 50 years and since then, the US has primarily acted to restrain South Korea and prevent another war, not vice-versa. Moreover, the amount of artillery the NORKS have pointed at Seoul would be enough of a deterrent to prevent a war under all but the most dire of circumstances.

So, why does Kim Jung-Il really want nuclear missiles and the ability to launch missiles at the US and Japan? It’s not, as liberals would have you believe, because he’s afraid of us, it’s because he wants things from us.

Which brings us to the latest news,

North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese news report said Thursday, as Russia and China urged the regime to return to international disarmament talks on its rogue nuclear program.

The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers), would be launched from North Korea’s Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan’s top-selling newspaper. It cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.

The missile launch could come between July 4 and 8, the paper said.
While the newspaper speculated the Taepodong-2 could fly over Japan and toward Hawaii, it said the missile would not be able to hit Hawaii’s main islands, which are about 4,500 miles (7,200 kilometers) from the Korean peninsula.

…U.S. officials have said the North has been preparing to fire a long-range missile capable of striking the western U.S. In Washington on Tuesday, Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it would take at least three to five years for North Korea to pose a real threat to the U.S. west coast.

…The independent International Crisis Group think tank, meanwhile, said the North’s massive stockpile of chemical weapons is no less serious a threat to the region than its nuclear arsenal.

It said the North is believed to have between 2,500 and 5,000 tons of chemical weapons, including mustard gas, phosgene, blood agents and sarin. These weapons can be delivered with ballistic missiles and long-range artillery and are “sufficient to inflict massive civilian casualties on South Korea.”

“If progress is made on rolling back Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions, there could be opportunities to construct a cooperative diplomatic solution for chemical weapons and the suspected biological weapons program,” the think tank said in a report released Thursday.

First question: so, how’s that missile defense system looking now? Does it really make sense, with all the money Obama is wasting, for him to be cutting money for missile defense now? The man can find billions to waste on the unions, ACORN, and bailing out foreign banks, but protecting the West Coast of the United States from nuclear blackmail? Nah, that’s not a priority.

…..And incidentally, folks, that’s just what we’re talking about here. That’s the end game. What happens when the NORKS have the capacity to hit the West Coast and one of Kim Jong-Il’s lackeys calls Obama and says, “Give us billions or we launch a nuke at LA?”

I can tell you what we should do in that situation, but Obama is not a brave, decisive, or particularly smart man. You think he’d hesitate to funnel billions to North Korea to buy them off, if he thought he could keep it out of the papers? I don’t. North Korea knows what kind of man Obama is, too, and they’ve probably made the same calculation about what Obama would do in that situation.

Perhaps Obama will surprise all of us and will do more than give some fine sounding speech about his “grave concern” if North Korea fires a missile towards Hawaii. It might change North Korea’s mind about what they can get away with a few years down the road once they’re capable of launching a nuclear bomb at an American city.
