Straight White Men are Banned From an Equality Conference

Modern “diversity” is rooted in liberal circles on a belief that centers on retribution. To achieve “equality” the left believes it is right to discriminate against those who have been traditionally seen as being the historical oppressors. In furtherance of this horrid belief, a university conference on inclusion has opted to ban straight, white males from the discussion.

From HeatSt:

News that a university lecturers’ union has banned straight, white men from attending their equality conferences in a bid to create “safe spaces” is deeply depressing.

University and College Union equality conferences are held exclusively for women, LGBT, ethnic minorities or disabled people, and members must declare their “protected characteristic” when applying to attend.

Surely UCU can see the irony of hosting an equality conference where – as George Orwell wrote – some are more equal than others?

One cannot deny the privileges that straight, white men have in today’s society.

We live in a world where women effectively work for nothing from November 9 until December 31  because men in full-time work continue to earn 14 per cent more than their female counterparts.

Britain is a country where less than one in 10 CEOs are women in FTSE 100 companies.

Ethnic minorities are still underrepresented in parliament.

These are all issues which desperately need addressing.

However, excluding straight, white men from taking part in these conferences completely undermines their point.

How are people expected to tackle minority issues when, in the most crass manner, one of the root causes of that problem is specifically excluded from participating – as though it didn’t exist?

It is also incredibly ignorant to suggest that white men cannot – and don’t want to – fight for equality.

As Northumbria University lecturer Emma-Jane Phillips, who sits on the UCU equality committee, told the Times Higher Education magazine: “It is ridiculous that people who regard equality as their life can’t attend our equality conference. Equality reps are passionate about equality regardless of their own situation. To infer that someone does not understand someone’s situation just because you don’t tick a box is insulting.”

By excluding this group, UCU is only strengthening the divide.

That is not the way to tackle inequality, and it’s absurd that UCU thinks it is.

The outrage is understandable. However, it should be noted that while there have been historical advantages to being a straight, white male, I submit that that is no longer true.

While the wage gap does exist, it exists for a large variety of factors and none of them are due to prejudice. Studies show that women and men prioritize differently and as a result, women are less represented in the work place because of choices- not institutional discrimination.

Secondly, with affirmative action, homosexuals, women and ethnic minorities are offered a level of job protection not afforded to straight white males.
