The federal government is not just cracking down on illegal immigrants who are hiding in the country, they are also going after people who have illegally obtained naturalization either through lying or some other sneaky means.
Indian national Baljinder Singh, 43, is the first person to have his citizenship stripped from him as a result of this operation. Prosecutors claim that he came to the United States in 1991 without travel papers and them failed to announce that he had a deportation order issued against him when he applied for citizenship via marrying an American citizen.
He had his legal status removed by a federal judge on January 5th, meaning that he will continue to live in the country as a lawful permanent resident, but could be subject to deportation, said the Justice Department.
Operation Janus has identified approximately 315,000 immigrants living in the United States whose fingerprints aren’t registered in the national database.

“Among those cases, some may have sought to circumvent criminal record and other background checks in the naturalization process,” read a statement released by the Justice Department.
“I hope this case and those to follow send a loud message that attempting to fraudulently obtain U.S. citizenship will not be tolerated,” said USCIS Director Francis Cissna in a statement. “Our nation’s citizens deserve nothing less.”
Singh is just one of many cases that has been referred to the DOJ by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, though an exact number was not provided.
“The Justice Department will continue to use every tool to protect the integrity of our nation’s immigration system, including the use of civil denaturalization,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Chad Readler of the Justice Department’s Civil Division, adding that Singh had “exploited our immigration system and unlawfully secured the ultimate immigration benefit of naturalization.”
These people have avoided justice for their deceit. You won’t catch me shedding any tears if they are sent back to their home countries. American citizenship is something that needs to be earned. It’s not something to be given away freely like a travel pamphlet. It is disappointing but not surprising that someone would lie to get citizenship, because America is amazing. However, we are also a country of laws, and we can’t simply allow legal relativism to flourish, or what kind of society would that made us? It would be anarchy, and that has never gone well for any country that has suffered under it.
