Teen’s Friends Realize Why His ‘Older’ Prom Date Looks Familiar

My heart couldn’t be any more full after reading this. There is so much goodness in the world that we just don’t hear about because it doesn’t get clicks. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than being able to read a story like this and having your faith in humanity restored, even if it’s only for a moment.

Melissa Roshan Potter, 36, had an extremely rough childhood. She was born to a rape victim who was only 13 years-old and was forced to endure 23 different foster homes. After becoming pregnant at the age of 16 and having to live in a homeless shelter, it was hard to believe this woman and her son would ever amount to anything.

And yet…

Trey, 18, began getting ready for his prom, eager to take his beautiful date out for a fantastic evening that she would never forget.

The woman he would be escorting to the event? His own mother.

See, after becoming pregnant at 16, his mother could not attend her own prom. She was busy raising a child who needed her. Because of that, she missed out on something that many consider to be a rite of passage.

“She never had that experience and she’s risked so much for me throughout my life and made so many sacrifices,” the young man said. “I thought it would be the right thing to do.”

In a touching gesture of appreciation, he took his mother to his prom, offering her an experience she’d never gotten to have at his age.

“When I was pregnant with him well, I heard, ‘Mel because you lived in the foster care system, you’re probably not going to raise a thriving individual,'” the mother recounted. “It just doesn’t happen. You can’t give him what you don’t have.”

“So seeing who he has become and knowing the sacrifices that have been made and how much I love him and seeing that come to fruition, I’ve proved them wrong.”

Despite an upbringing that would lead most people down a dark path, Potter has made it in the modeling industry, gracing the covers of several magazines and is an advocate for children in the foster care system. Trey is planning to study to become a chemical engineer, becoming the first member of his family to attend college.

There is nothing more beautiful than a child repaying a parent who has done everything for them.

Potter only stayed for the first hour of the prom and decided to leave afterward so her son could enjoy the time with his friends.

“I left after one hour because I wanted Trey to have time to enjoy the prom without me there. … When I went home and went to bed I felt so much peace as I went to sleep. The evening was the highlight of my life.”

I’m not crying, you’re crying!
