In our comfortable lives, we too-often forget about the awesome power of nature. When a man attempted to reel-in a whopping 20lb salmon, he was surprised and startled when nature had another plan and a predator snatched his dinner away in the blink of an eye.

As the saying goes: there’s always a bigger fish.

And that statement certainly proved true for YouTube user Thomas Tran while trying to reel in a 20lb chinook salmon off the coast of Canada.

In dramatic footage, Thomas captured himself reeling in the large salmon before another fish at least twice the size rises up from the depths to snatch it away.

The clip, which is just 35 seconds long, captures Thomas as the salmon he has hooked is just feet away from the boat he is sitting in.

However, as his catch thrashes around on the water’s surface, it attracts the attention of a much larger beast lurking beneath.

The huge fish easily takes the salmon in its mouth before swimming away, taking Thomas’s line with it, which likely snapped off under the strain.

While Thomas calls the fish a goliath, perhaps referring to the goliath grouper fish it is in fact more likely to be a sturgeon which are fairly common in Canada.

Sturgeon often feed on other fish, and can grow to enormous sizes, such as the one caught by Michael and Margaret Snell in Vancouver in 2012 which measured four meters long and weighed more than half a tonne.

We must remember that though we are the most-evolved species on the planet, our battles with nature are far from easy. Fishing, hunting and even just hiking can remind us how powerless we can be when up against the might of Mother Nature.
