Why Is Sarah Palin Resigning As Governor? I Think It’s 1 Of These 4 Reasons…

On my first day of vacation and this story breaks.

Wow.

Well, I had to do at least one post on this. Couldn’t help it.

When I first heard Sarah Palin wasn’t running again in 2010, I thought she was just clearing the way to run for President in 2012. There’s just no way she could have run for President while being governor of a state like Alaska at the same time.

However, the fact that she’s resigning changes the calculation somewhat.

There are 4 possible reasons that immediately come to mind for why she may be resigning. There may be others that I haven’t considered yet (Cut me some slack; I am on vacation).

1) She may intend to run for President in 2012 and feels like it’s to her advantage to resign now. It will mean no more phony ethics complaints. She’ll be able to raise money and campaign for Republican candidates without having it used against her as governor as well. On the downside, it would hurt her in her weakest area: experience. Some people may perceive it as being flaky and emotional as well, which is something a female politician needs to work especially hard to avoid.

2) There may be some big scandal that’s about to come down the pike. That’s a pretty standard reason for resignations of this sort. What it would be, I have no idea at this point.

3) She, or perhaps Todd, could have a big health issue.

4) Maybe the Left finally wore her down and she just decided politics wasn’t worth it anymore. I’ve seen it happen to other conservative women who’ve endured far less abuse than Sarah Palin and her family have so far. Indeed, it’s part of the Left’s strategy with conservative women. They try to make politics so ugly, so nasty, so personal, and so vicious that conservative women just quit.

Initially, I was leaning towards the first answer, but the more I think about it, the less sense it seems to make for her not to finish out her entire term. Maybe her political advisers just did the math and said, “Hey, you can’t be viable in 2012 if you’re not out there raising money and campaigning for Republicans on a regular basis throughout this cycle,” but it’s not possible to say at this point.

Later tonight, what’s really going on will start leak out. Until then, expect plenty of wild speculation.

Update #1: I was talking on the phone to Cassy Fiano and we came up with possible reason #5: She could be pregnant again.

Update #2: From Sarah Palin’s Twitter account: “We’ll soon attach info on decision to not seek re-election… this is in Alaska’s best interest, my family’s happy… it is good, stay tuned.”

Update #3: I’ve heard some people speculating that Palin may be resigning so she can run as senator, but that doesn’t make much sense. If she wanted to be senator, the very last thing she would do is quit the most prominent job in Alaska.

Of course, I could be wrong about all of this. One thing I have learned over the years is that even very smart, relentlessly logical people can do some extremely illogical, unexplainable things when they’re stressed.

Okay, my guest bloggers can take it from here. I’m getting back to my vacation.
