12 Year Old in “Vegetative State” After Tonsil Surgery in Canadian Hospital While Canadian Premier Comes to U.S. for Treatment
Written By : Duane Lester

When I first read the story of 12 year old Dylan Campbell, I was saddened for the family, and for Dylan. But I didn’t see how responsible the hospital was for his condition. See, this is the first explanation, as written at CBC.ca:

Dylan Campbell had the routine tonsillectomy in November and was released. However, about five days later, his mother rushed him back after he started coughing up blood, according to Morris Swan Shannacappo, grand chief of the Southern Chiefs Organization, an advocacy group for First Nations people in southern Manitoba.

The boy has been on life-support since then, completely dependent on caregivers.

Sounds like something happened at home and the boy was rushed to the hospital when it was already too late.

But then I read what happened when the boy arrived at the hospital:

The father said his son suffered a cardiac arrest five days after the surgery, just shortly after his mother rushed him back to the hospital because he was coughing up blood and having trouble breathing.

Dylan’s mother, Sandra Campbell, said the only thing hospital staff did for her son before his heart stopped was to give him a pan to collect the blood.

“He was puking – we had half a basin of blood clots and vomit,” Sandra said. “He was gasping for air.”

Sandra said because her son was flailing around, hospital staff restrained him, using so much force he was left with bruising on his arms and shoulders.

Jerry said when he showed up and saw what the hospital staff were doing to his son, he became so angry that security staff were called to take him away.

Hospital staff brought Jerry back to the emergency department a few minutes later.

“I can hear my wife screaming, `He’s gone, he’s gone,”‘ he recalls. “Now they were rushing to do something.”

Despite the efforts of doctors, a letter from Health Sciences Centre told the family that Dylan is “in a vegetative state . . . totally dependant on his caregivers to meet all his needs.”

What. An. Outrage.

This is despicable.

This child has a heart attack and the hospital staff do nothing.

This is the treatment the common people get. Brock Lesnar had to flee Canadian healthcare when he grew ill. He said it nearly killed him.

But, if you are one of the elite, you get different treatment:

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams will travel to the United States this week where he will undergo heart surgery, according to the Globe and Mail. However, Williams will have surgery south of the border because the treatment he needs is not available in his province.

The Canadian Press notes that the Premier’s surgery in the US has caused a fierce online health care debate because Newfoundland and Labrador has attempted to restore confidence in their health care system after several botched breast cancer tests.

Provincial Liberal Leader Yvonne Jones offered the Premier her best wishes but demanded that Williams owes the public an explanation on what he needs and why he’s traveling to the US for surgery.

Tell yourself, liberals, that this isn’t Canada and it will be different here. Then explain to me and everyone else why the first thing Congress did was to exclude themselves from the health care bill they want the rest of us subjected to.

This is how it is. When Castro was ill, doctors from Spain were flown in.

If these socialist health care systems are so fabulous, why do the leaders there have to keep looking to other countries to make them healthier?

Oh….but according to Jack shite, the little boy is still better off b/c his country (finally) paid for it.

As much as most ‘progressives’ are loathe to admit it, rank (and wealth) have their privileges. Though it isn’t kosher for them to talk about it openly, each and every time a high profile ‘progressive’ is faced with a personal medical crisis, they quickly reach for resources that the common prole would never have access to. Then come the inevitable apologists and spin-meisters who try their best to keep others from connecting the dots about the duplicity and hypocrisy of these fine ‘progressives’. Though I will admit, I’ve never heard one of these spin-bots tackle the glaring hypocrisy of Congress exempting itself from the rules and programmes it so desperately wishes to impose on the other 305MM of us.

It all reminds me of the Hollydrool celebs who sing songs and make loopy statements in the media espousing progressive cause after cause, but in the end who also live in gated mansions, are ferried around by chauffeurs, fly in private jets and when sick, hit high-priced private treatment centres rather than to accept what medical care is on offer to the rest of us. They never miss an opportunity to enjoy the privileges their wealth and status afford them, all the while telling the rest of us that we’re sinners, heathens and troglodytes for wanting the same things.

One thing I noted while reading about PM Williams yesterday is that he’s only having to medi-vac to the US because the surgery he needs isn’t available in his home provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador. But what about the rest of Canada? Canada is much larger than just it’s Atlantic provinces, after all, and Health Canada is a national organisation. Isn’t there a hospital in Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax, Charlottetown, or even Toronto which can provide him the services he needs? After all, each of those cities except Toronto is closer to Newfoundland and Labrador than any major American city. Is this surgery just not available at all in Canada? If so, one has to ask what good a health system is which doesn’t provide a full range of health services.

On another note, I gather from the comment in the story above from “Morris Swan Shannacappo, grand chief of the Southern Chiefs Organization, an advocacy group for First Nations people in southern Manitoba[.]“, that Dylan Campbell is a Canadian of non-European origin. I’m fairly certain that PM Williams is a Canadian of European origin – I wonder why that angle isn’t being highlighted. Isn’t this just another case of the rich and powerful white ruler getting the elevator while the poor native kid gets the shaft?

    Oh my.

Tbirk, I say you can’t use one sad situation to indict a whole system.

You seem to be arguing that iff the boy had lived in the US without health coverage he would have lived.

No, Jack. Apparently YOU are the only one that can do that.

I would still like to know why you are so in favor of ObamaCare, a plan which will do harm to the very people it proports to help.

Isnt this the pot calling the kettle black. This is the exact technique you use to try and force social health care on us b/c 10 million here in the USA dont have insurance (they can still go to the ER and get care.) Yesterday you posted this about the canadian guy getting heart surgery here:

“You know what? His health care is still paying for his teatment. In the US he would die or go broke without coverage.

    Got it fuck head?

Actually, Jack, the story about Dylan Campbell has f*ck-all to do with the funding mechanism or administrative nature of the health care delivery system and everything to do with clinical competency. And isn’t clinical competency what we’re all seeking when we reach out to receive health care? The only nexus between the two topics in this story is that in the modern world, clinical competence costs money because those who’re clinically competent almost always “sell out” and go work for an organisation which will pay them what they think they’re worth. Money doesn’t guarantee competence in health care, but a chronic shortage of it will drive the vast majority of clinically competent people into other organisations. Just ask Health Canada – they lose hundreds of docs a year to the US because they don’t pay them jack-sh*t. I know, I love to recruit Canadian docs down here because they’re professionally hungry.

But that still doesn’t answer the question of why a 12 year-old non-European boy out in the prairies of Canada was offered such shoddy care while a nice lily-white politician of decidedly European descent and of greater means is being afforded an expensive trip to the States for surgery.

Must be one of those e-e-e-e-vil health insurance company things, eh? Oops, Santé Canada isn’t a company, is it? Nah, it’s an agency of the Canadian federal government.

I’m shocked that the premier of Canada would want to leave what Liberals keep telling us is that country’s outstanding health care system to come to backwards old America, where health care is “broken” and doctors often chop off patients’ feet for extra money. Isn’t he worried about losing his feet? Why didn’t he go to Cuba, the only health care system Liberals think is even better than Canada’s?

This outrage is what the socialists/leftists/democrats want for us!

Their is a “moral imperative” to shove government run HC down our throats – more like a moral outrage IHMO!

The only thing “equal” about this is that the average American citizen would be forced to pay more, lose tons of freedom, and die early and in more pain – all while the politically connected cheat the system and loot us!

This is exactly why medical care or health insurance can never become a “collective” government run system – its gets politicized and the weakest and most vunerable get screwed?

What alternatives or choices did this family have – answer: none!

What can they do about this outrage – answer: nothing! You cant appeal or fight the national government!

If we keep medical care and the payment for it individual/family choices then we will always have alternatives both for treatment and funding of it!

I can always find other doctors/hospitals and for payment, I can purchase insurance or pay with my own funds. I can get a new insurance company if I dont like my current one or I can hire John Edwards and sue the “evil” insurance compnay if I have an issue. I can get a loan. Heck, there is even plain ole fashioned private charity still in this country (as opposed to the liberal charity-by-government-robbing-my-neighbor-forced variery).

If the Federal government and leftist politicans ever succeded in taking over health care we will see many more horror stories like this and group political fighting for “collective” HC funding that will make the AUG town hall protests look like a 3 year olds birthday party!

Government run HC is primarily being pushed by leftist politicans solely for political purposes – they see it as the “hook” to get nearly 100% of the population dependent on the nanny state for an essential of life – and this is the result!

This kind of immorality and trampling of individual rights can never be allowed to happen in this nation!

What a bunch of hypocritcal leftist BS!

This IS WHAT THE LEFT DOES EVERYTIME THEY MANUFACTURE A “CRISIS” lol

The left demands perfection of freedom, free people, and free markets and cites every minor imperfection as the reason we need government intervention/force to “solve” what is in fact a normal situation in mandkind.

For example, the left will vilify “evil” insurance companies with a dozen or so SOB stories but ignore the tens of millions of satisfied customers who were helped to get lifesaving care. At the same time, the left will ignore that government programs perform much worse. Case in point, MediCare denies a much higher percentage of care (nearly double the worst insurance firm) then does any private or non-profit insurance firm – and loses tens of billions in fraud!

The lefits promise a government run utopia in exchange for you ceding your freedoms/rights/$$$$ and what you get is a much more broke situation – HC is a classic case in point as the issues with costs can be directly traced to bad government interventions!

These leftists are dishonest and arrogant to the core!

This is another lie and myth the left pushes!

Lack of health care DOES NOT mean lack of medical care or access to it!

The availiability of medical care is solely a function of how many providers are available – and they are abundant and of the highest quality in the USA!

How you pay for the care is a seperate issure – again, their are mulitiple ways to do this!

Simply because a person choses not to buy health insurance DOES NOT mean they are automatically getting “free” ER care or will go bankrupt!

Almost all of the uninsured pay all or a large part of their bills…..

And many peole CHOOSE to do this – its called “self-insurance” ie saving enough money to cover your own risk!

Now the comment by mr “Schite” about “well they wont go broke” is off the charts ignorant and cruel…..

“an estimated 40,000 Americans journeyed to Mexico last year to get dental?treatment”
    http://www.smartmoney.com/spending/deals/as-health-costs-soar-more-find-care-overseas-20918/

    Mexico?

“In 2006 alone, an estimated 150,000 Americans traveled abroad for medical care”

Hard to believe there is that much of a mass movement overseas seeking medical care in a country with “the best medical system in the world.”

Tort Reform? Remove the liability from the Doctors, so they can botch a routine tonsillectomy like they do in Canada….I don’t think so. If you want Doctors who are not held accountable for their actions, move to Canada.

  • ohioan

Tort reform does not remove accountability from doctors because it doesn’t mean that we can’t get sued… it simply means our costs (read: HEALTH CARE COSTS) go down because we don’t have to pay insurance companies exorbitant premiums to cover the off-chance that one of us gets a massive punitive award against us.

Tort-reform would not lead to health care rationing (which is exactly what the Canadian boy experienced), it would lead to GREATER access and availability to a health care system that would be more efficient (not constrained by the apprehension of CYA medicine).
