Americans want a Free Tibet, and none of that having to buy one first, either!

If Barack Obama wants a way to get back in the good with a majority of Americans, maybe he should aim the troops toward Tibet:[1]

Washington (CNN) — Nearly three-quarters of all Americans think Tibet should be an independent country, according to a new national poll.

Or maybe not:

However, the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday also indicates that most Americans think it is more important to maintain good relations with China than to take a stand on Tibet.

But if that’s the case… [2]

At the risk of angering Beijing, Obama did tell the exiled spiritual leader he backs the preservation of Tibet’s culture and supports human rights for its people. He also gave encouragement to the Dalai Lama’s request for talks with the Chinese government.

Nothing about independence, though. Not according to that story.

Sounds like triangulation to me.

But that’s not why I’m blogging about this. This is why I’m blogging about this:[3]

The Dalai Lama is popular with Americans, according to the survey, with 56 percent holding a favorable view of him and only 18 percent having an unfavorable impression.

“That puts him in the same neighborhood as other major religious figures,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Favorable ratings for the pope, at 59 percent, and Billy Graham, at 57 percent, are virtually identical to the numbers for the Dalai Lama.”

Polling popularity numbers for religious leaders? Isn’t that a little bit like polling the approval ratings of former presidents?[4]
