Ferguson, another lesson on how to be authentically Black

Picture this scenario:

An African American resident of Ferguson wakes up one morning and hears about an 18 year old unarmed black male shot dead in the street by a White cop. The resident can’t believe the story because it sounds so incredible.

So the resident decides to daringly keep an open mind because he wasn’t at the shooting and doesn’t know what really happened. His open mind gets closed relatively soon.

“Can you believe what they did to that boy? Those racist motherfuckers! They killed that boy for no reason. Shot’em with his hands in the air, in the back!” said a neighbor.

“I don’t know what happened” said the resident

“What you mean you don’t know? They murdered that boy. For no reason!”

“Well..”

“You know how those cops are. They killing niggas left and right. What’s a matter with you B?”

“Yeah, you right man,” says resident, “That was cold blooded..they killed that boy.”

The Ferguson resident who wanted to keep an open mind gives into the social pressure to think one way only otherwise he risks ridicule or being social outcast from his community. Who wants to go through that struggle? Who wants to be called a sellout, or an Uncle Tom or a Handkerchief head?

The events that led to the killing of Michael Brown are yet to be determined. In this country one is innocent until proven guilty. But, many in Ferguson have made their final judgment, based on race, as to what happened and how it happened. It matters not what really happened. To be authentically black means one can only believe one way.
