I Get Emails: 4 Reasons Why Conspiracy Theories Don’t Pan Out

While I was at the Defending the American Dream Summit, I received the following email that, yes, you’re reading it right, is making serious reference to alien reptiles running the planet:

Alright mate

My names Andy. Dont get me wrong i have nothing against you and your entitled to your opinion but have you really put in the hours checking out the conspiracy and Ickes views on it? I know you’ve done some research because you pulled out those extracts from various books, but if you take the time to check out the whole thing, it actually makes a lot of sense.

I know the reptilians sounds a bit far out, but thats not the place to start looking into this whole thing, you really need to start now, in the modern world, in order to look at the history, i know that sounds a bit mad.

Im not expecting you to listen to me because your views are clear reading your article, and im not trying to start an argument or anything im just interested in why you have such negative views on this. Dont start with the reptilians, start with the new world order, our governments f*cking us over, 9/11, the illuminati, and so on. You would be very surprised.

Anyway thanks a lot, take it easy.

Let me answer this seriously — well, as seriously as I can in an email mentioning a potpourri of wacky conspiracy theories.

First off, I tend to be extremely skeptical of conspiracy theories simply because, objectively, almost none of them ever pan out. Setting that aside, there are certain things I’ve learned about people in my life that make these conspiracy theories unlikely:

* I literally talk and chat with people who have genius level IQs on a daily basis and you know what? They’re very smart, but they’re not as smart as some people might think they are. There are no “Batman super villain” type geniuses out there who can think 5 steps ahead of everyone else. It just doesn’t work like that.

* Do you seriously believe that the same guys who can’t even run Cash-for-Clunkers can turn right around and execute a brilliant conspiracy theory? Government is just too slow, stupid, and incompetent to genuinely pull off a major conspiracy.

* Having talked to a number of members of Congress, both on and off the record, I can tell you that these guys tend to have huge egos. They’re not letting the Illumimati, the ZOG, the New World Order or any other outside group order them around.

* Keeping secrets is extraordinarily difficult. Look at all the information that leaked out during the Bush years. Moreover, think back to Abu Ghraib where the soldiers involved were so dumb that they took pictures of themselves breaking the law and then let those pics slip out.

Put it all together and it’s nearly impossible for a conspiracy theory to pan out.

There is a difference between a conspiracy which could be as simple as two people getting together to do something secretive and nefarious, and the Great Conspiracies which rule the world.

Furthermore there is a difference between groupthink and conspiracy. If everyone in the room thinks Kucinich is a reasonable guy then its not a conspiracy when they mess over the ordinary American.

You could consider how Hollywood is behaving in the Polanski case as proof of conspiracy. Its more of a case of the aristocracy having total ownership of the livelihood of the little people there, Leftist groupthink, and the way that committees can be the breeding ground of conformists.

However, I think David Horowitz talked a bit about the CPUSA and operational controls (aka horrific violence. He used the example of the IRA. If you ticked them off they shot you in the knee. If you really ticked them off, they shot you in the other side of the knee which not being an expert on kneecapping, I gather is somehow much worse.) I propose the quiet threat of violence is part of why some of the Left are so self-sacrificing and coherent.

The KGB ran operations directed at the American mind for some time, and I've heard it argued that a lot of the bad ideas floating around the world today can be traced to their efforts. And a lot of conservatives suspect that Soros and company is paying some trolls on conservative blogs to harass conservatives. These are not Great Conspiracies, but they come close. And its not so much Brilliance as Tough Thinking and Unremitting Work that push these things forward.

I'd say there are conspiracies, but they are not unopposed. You could consider Yosi Sargent's phone call an effort to launch a conspiracy that failed.

And one last conspiracy, a true Great Conspiracy that I do think is likely from my understanding of his tactics and aims. Satan inspires wicked men and dupes to do his business.

I ran into my first, in person, conspiracy theorist a couple of days ago. He thinks the government plotted 9/11, President Obama is not a US citizen, Glenn Beck works for the CIA, and President Bush secretly communicated with Osama bin Laden. After just a few minutes, I stopped trying to argue b/c it was clear that he was so firmly entrenched in his own paranoia that nothing would persuade him. Further, I could see myself accidentally lending credibility to his hysteria by even trying to pretend he was reasonable.

BTW, anybody miss me? I'm baaaaaack!

I don't believe in "space reptiles", but I'll never be convinced that someone in the govt, or {black project}, is hiding the real truth about UFOs,….there's just too damn many "unexplained" sightings for over 60 years by pilots, military, police and citizens.

…..And I'm NOT buying their crap about "swamp gas, ball lightning, sprites, etc".

On that part, I guess you could call me a "conspiracist".

IOW,..imo, they haven't shown me enough evidence that these objects are just "man made objects or natural phenoma".

I think the jury is still out on that and possibly other lies the govt has fed us,…so you guys can laugh at me if you want,…but I sure as hell don't trust the govt.

Martin, I've seen a lot of those "contrails" and wouldn't even begin to imagine why they were made, but that's a lot of planes flying across the sky.

I believe 9/11 was the work of radical Islamists.

JFK? Probably just Oswald alone,..but I wouldn't stake my life on it.

Sometimes I wonder if the whole friggin world isn't just one huge conspiracy! Ha.
