On the O-lympics, conservatives got it wrong.
Written By : TrogloPundit

So President Obama went to Copenhagen, to “convince” the IOC that Chicago should get the 2016 Games.

He failed. Rio got them instead.

And all along the way, some of the most popular, widest-read, most influential conservative columnists were getting it wrong.

For example, Allahpundit:

There’s no way The One would risk his political capital on a personal appeal in Denmark unless he’d been assured that Chicago will get the games if he makes a cameo. It’s a done deal.

Jim Geraghty:

The fact that Obama is going signals that Chicago is getting the Olympics, right? Would Obama go if he hadn’t been told that his attendance was the difference-maker?

Ramesh Ponnuru:

Does anyone seriously believe that the president would take a quick trip to Copenhagen with the possibility of coming back empty-handed? If the president is going, it’s because he knows that Chicago has already won.

And…TrogloPundit:

…he’s only going – in this last-second whirlwind kind of way – to maximize the credit he’ll get when the IOC announces Chicago. That’s where my money is. Deal’s done, and Obama wants the applause.

That’s right. Allahpundit, Geraghty, Ponnuru…TrogloPundit. You pretty much think of them all in the same breath, don’t you?

All of us, making exactly the same mistake. And what mistake was that? We gave the Obama administration credit.

We assumed they were thinking things through. We assumed that they understood the fluid nature and amorphous importance of political capital. We assumed that, Obama’s obvious lack of experience aside, grayer beards would be there to advise and protect the president’s prestige and influence, not to mention his headlines.

We – people who make their living and/or their fun by ripping Obama and his allies – assumed that they would act like experienced professionals, and we were wrong.

One of us, at least, had the foresight to also ask:

Maybe the Obama White House is just that incompetent?

But I’m sure that writer wouldn’t want to rub that in.

(The TrogloPundit is very disappointed to miss his chance at competing in the bratwurst-eating event, which he’s sure would have been included by 2016.)

Maybe he was promised the Games. And if so; how sleazy to go over to take the credit. Perhaps enough judges decided on their own that their one vote wouldn't matter and they couldn't in good consience award it to Mr. Obama. I mean Chicago.

The Obamas came across very badly in this whole ordeal.

So the Obama Administration is either more dumb or more stupid than we thought? I didn't think that was possible.

I love the new Lib talking point that we are "un-American" for laughing at Chicago losing the Olympics. What they do not get is that we are laughing at Obama for putting his cred on the line for what is a minor issue.

Oh, and then there is that whole thing about liberals wanting America to lose in Iraq.

  • BIG

This is not the fault of Obama. It is all Bush's fault. Just ask Roland Burris, the man who replaced Obama in the Senate:

"that the image of the U. S. has been so tarnished in the last 8 years that, even Barack Obama making an unprecedented pitch for the games could not overcome the hatred the world has for us as a result of George Bush."

Will Democrats ever grow up and accept responsibility for their mistakes or are we in for 3 more years of screaming rage at Emanuel Goldstein, er, George Bush?

  • William Teach

I'd say we are in for 3 more years of preschooler type screaming rage by liberals. It's all they know.

Obama's ego is just that big I tell you. Plus now the entire news cycle for this weekend will waste our time with what went wrong and the loss of the Olympics, instead of all the other real disasters Obama and the demcorats are giving us. Literally the startegy here looks like it was to set up so the MSM could use a failure, the whole Olympics crap, to cover up all the other bad failures.

  • http://networdblog.blogspot.com/ Christopher_Taylor

Yeah, Alex has it right, that's what I figured it was about. Nobody figured it was a done deal, President Obama and Oprah Winfrey figured they were so big and so loved and so persuasive that the IOC would just have to listen to them.

Their problem is that they didn't bribe the IOC, that's how you get your city. Not by persuasion or good reasons but by making the members rich and giving them things.

The good part's gonna be in 2016, when we get to keep asking the Liberals "Weren't these supposed to be the Obamalympics?"

I love the new Lib talking point that we are "un-American" for laughing at Chicago losing the Olympics.

I thought "being fair" was American. Last I remembered, the US hosted the Olympics far more than Brazil so it's only FAIR that they should have another chance.

I was thinking the same thing. If true, all the more reason Obama should be chastised.

Obama is too stupid to realize that political leaders can stab you in the back for their own sake. Reasonable people have learned that lesson but Obama continues to show his incompetence.

  • Rickvid_in_Seattle

I gotta say, I am really surprised at the idiot mistakes this administration has made. Okay, Obama is a political naif whom anyone with a lick of sense and real world understanding knew was gpoing to get slapped around by other national leaders. He is a child. But his staff are very seasoned political operatives. I truly am astounded at how badly they have blundered, even given that nothing is really clear cut from thier points of view. Cut them some slack, and they are still incredibly dumber than dumb.

  • http://networdblog.blogspot.com/ Christopher_Taylor

Yeah well the left misses the point. We're not laughing at Chicago.

And Rick, are you really all that sure the people around him are any less childish? Reset buttons and Czars who praise the founder of NAMBLA?

  • http://wastingtimewithalex.com/ AlexinCT

CT, you would be absolutely baffled how corrupt and f-ed up the rest of the world is – even in Europe – compared to here. And I am not talking about politicians (the ones we have now give every UN, EU, or third world hell hole a run for their money). Bribery and pay-offs are always part of doing business. It is a testament to how much better our companies are in general that they can not only compete, but so often win. all these people living in the US that pine to be more like Europe have always baffled me. They must have a romanticized vision of the rest of the world, and have no clue how much better they have it here.

  • http://www.2008news.com jimg

I got into a discussion last night with somebody who – predictably – blamed Bush.

So I asked, if the rest of the world hated us because of Bush and our 'cowboy diplomacy' over the last eight years and now with this new kid on the block everything would be fine … what better way to put one, last finger in Bush's eye than to give the Olympics to Chicago. At Obama's personal request.

"We hated Bush. We like you. Here's your Olympics."

He paused for a second, looked at me and the subject never came up again.

  • Bill_Dalasio

Yeah well the left misses the point. We're not laughing at Chicago.

Honestly, Mr. Taylor, I'm more inclined to congratulate the people of Chicago on this. By most accounts, hosting the Olympics generates an absolute fortune….for some people, generally the well connected and positioned to take advantage of the situation. However, those fortunes are generally less than the losses and inconvenience incurred by the rest of the population in the name of civic glory. The difference is something economists call "dead weight loss".

  • Rhyme_and_Reason

this whole things seems a bit overblown. its just the olympics. i doubt anyone outside of chicago would even really care. why even waste money bidding for these things when there's so many other things that need to be fixed right now?

    yawn, move on.

  • http://www.superdickery.com mightysamurai

    its just the olympics.

For the umpteenth time, it's not about the Olympics. It's about the fact that President Obama chose to drop everything and PERSONALLY appear before the IOC to beg for the Olympics to come to Chicago.

Not only is that something no President has ever done before, doesn't Obama have anything better to do? Like deal with the ever increasing deficit and unemployment? Or figure out what to do about Iran? Or find some time to speak with his Generals in Afghanistan? (You know, the war he said was of the utmost importance during the campaign?)

  • http://networdblog.blogspot.com/ Christopher_Taylor

You can tell how badly this hurts them by how desperately the left wants to ignore this ever happened. Brush it under the rug. Means nothing, shrug, just forget it ever happened.

It's hilarious, really. The problem is, with the legacy media on the same page, they can get all their failures and lies about this buried like all the times they were humiliatingly wrong about Iraq and just pretended it never happened.

  • GDR

As you may have noticed….I am not a big fan of the current President or his policies

However, the timing of this event was obviously designed to shift the focus from the government HC takeover plan rolling out of committee and the additional 260K jobs lost

Diversion is a very important tactic in every battle

Now everyone will be talking all weekend about a "non event" the whole weekend rather then reading thru the detail of the Bacus HC scam and calling Congress and raising holy heck like they should be doing – the vote is tues

Do you know what is in the Bacus bill?

Besides gloating about the President's inconsequential and temporay setback – what have you done today to take action to stop the HC takeover from happening?

We conservatives are supposed to be adults and the party of thinkers and ideas – gloating like 3rd graders should be beneath our dignity – leave that to the children of the left

Obama's failure speaks for itself, it should have been a small footnote on the day and the balance of the time in the conservative media should have been spent shedding the light of truth on the HC takeover bill

The HC bill will radically and fundamentally change our economy, our health outcomes, our society and politics for the worse

The more people know about the HC takeover, the less people like about it.

No the Obama people didnt get into the WH by being stupid, they new this would draw attention on this thru the whole weekend and beyond. And its a shout term issue of no importance. Plus, it helps their narrative as critics being overreactionary zealots.

Everyday HC is not the top item in the news is a victory for Obama – we have a very limited time period to kill this off and we are wasting it on a frivilous and irrelavent issue

  • drothgery

I hate to sound like I'm defending Obama (which I most certainly not), but this decision, like London over NYC for 2012 and letting Beijing get anywhere near the Olympics in 2008, says more about the insanity of the IOC than it does about Obama. The Olympics in a third-world country with very narrow sports interests (Brazilians top three sports loves are soccer, soccer, and soccer) is a recipe for financial disaster.

  • http://networdblog.blogspot.com/ Christopher_Taylor

One more time: we're not laughing because of the Olympics.

  • http://Kingfisher Kingfisher

No the Obama people didnt get into the WH by being stupid, they new this would draw attention on this thru the whole weekend and beyond. And its a shout term issue of no importance.

Alright, so what? It did draw attention? Big deal.

We can multitask. This will be over and we'll be back to the health care issue. If this was to deflect attention, it won't work.

  • Trooper_John_Smith

You all are so incredibly naive!

The truth is that Chicago DID have the Olympics sewed up, and the President and First Lady and Oprah went over to accept it with proper grace and charity. I mean, the very election of President Obama has made us loved and admired in places from Pyongyang to Tehran to Jakarta.

(Music: Empire Theme from Star Wars) But that was before Karl Rove, The Architect, picked up the phone and used his incredibly omnipotent powers of persuasion, blackmail, extortion, rhetoric, bluster and hypnotism to bend the committee voters to his supremely evil will. maniacal laughter Karl Rove did his evil best and destroyed the Olympic hopes and dreams of the poor, dispossessed working men and women of Chicago, the City of Broad Shoulders. Yes, Karl Rove did it…
