Republicans Finally Become Conservatives Again
Written By : Kathleen McKinley

Washington, DC - U.S. Congressman Mike Pence, Chairman of the House Republican Conference, delivered the following remarks today after the House Republican Conference approved a moratorium on all earmarks:

“Federal spending is out of control and the American people know it. Earmarks have become emblematic of everything that is wrong with spending here in Washington D.C. Today, after a marathon debate within the House Republican Conference, House Republicans have determined to renounce earmark requests of all kinds in this Congress, and the American people won that debate.

“By standing in favor of a moratorium on earmarks in this Congress, House Republicans are making a clean break from the past. We are offering the American people a fresh start on spending in Washington, D.C. We are offering the American people a new way forward. With the health care reform bill being debated and haggled about in these very hallways, no doubt earmarks are being talked about in a different way by the Democrat Majority. After the ‘Cornhusker Kickback,’ the ‘Gatorade Deal,’ the ‘Second Louisiana Purchase,’ the American people want us to change business as usual in Washington D.C.

“The contrast will be startling in the days ahead. No doubt as Democrats are making backroom deals, and offering earmarks to pass their government takeover of health care, today with one voice House Republicans have stepped forward and said, ‘The time has come to set aside earmarking as usual and begin the process of turning federal spending back over to the American people with a new course, new discipline, and new transparency.’”

Republicans seem to be good at being conservatives up until the moment they get power.

Too bad, we need a legitimate small-government, fiscally conservative party that keeps its head once in power.

Typical liberal “Why didn’t you conservatives do this during Bush’s term?” bitching in 5…4…3…2…

Of course, that begs the question that if liberals were so concerned about spending during Bush’s term, why aren’t they making a big deal about spending during Obama’s term? Of course, we all know that’s a lie…the left only cares about destroying this country.

    King,

the bigger question becomes if this was just for show or not, the proof will be in the pudding.

OK, so when did was the left ever interested in reducing the deficits? Or were you too angry to actually read my post?

  • Bill_Dalasio

OK, so when did was the left ever interested in reducing the deficits?

Silly King! When they want to use it as an excuse to raise taxes, of course!

  • D-Vega

Clinton was a deficit hawk and it actually got him elected.

This is simply blowing smoke up the conservative base’s arses.

Who exactly is part of this Rep conference and let’s compare whether they are taking earmarks.

Even Ron Paul takes earmarks, for Pete’s sake.

  • fiza

Wow, the Republicans have become conservative when they are no longer in charge! The last year your so-called conservatives were in charge during the Bush (your hero) administration, congress attached a record 13,000+ earmarks to the spending bills. What was the max number of earmarks during the great Clinton years? Approximately 1,000?
The Republicans conservative? What a joke, a sad joke!

  • D-Vega

They can’t help it, fiza. This is a left-leaning country.

  • AF_Vet

    “This is a left-leaning country.”

Thanks for the giggle Vega! (lol)

Yeah they always get more conservative sounding near election day. I’ll take any fiscal conservative leaning action from congress, but I don’t trust them to keep it up for any real length of time. If they were serious about it they’d say “no earmarks, ever again” and change the rules about how this sort of thing is written up in bills (because not all earmarks are necessarily pork). This is a nice first step, but does anyone really trust politicians?

The Republican party has to be more than “the guys who suck less than Democrats.”

Hey fiza, what party was controlling the house during the Clinton years? Was that party acting more or less conservative at the time?

    Just askin.

Yes, what happened to that party when they took over the White House, in addition to the congress, after the Clinton years.
They blew those surpluses as far as the eye could see and turned them into deficits as far as the eye could see. Remember when Greenspan and wall street were worried that there would be no US treasuries when the national debt was paid off.

  • Power_System_Oper

OP: Repbulicans finally become more conservative.

Not after all this time, don’t tell me that we still have conservatives falling for the general platitudes coming forth from the GOP about “cutting federal spending.” How does that square with the fact that only about 10 GOP members of the House of Representatives have agreed to co-sponsor GOP Representative Paul Ryan’s detailed plan of specific spending cuts which will balance the budget without raising taxes? Even GOP Minority Leader John Boehner who brags that “things will be different in the House if he becomes Speaker” refuses to sign on to Rep Ryan’s plan. Yeah sure John, we can expect things to be different all right. You and your posse will be sticking future tax payers for the costs of your favorite pork rather than Nancy and her amigos.

You forgot to include “voodoo” with Paul Ryan’s detailed plan, piglet.

Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.

Even though most people self identify as conservative….? I guess its too much to ask for a little proof that this is a left leaning country.

Vega, if this is a left leaning country (which is a lie but I’ll play along) then Obama is truly a bat-shit, hardcore, far-left, terrorist-kissing asshole and you’re in the same boat for voting for him. Remember, Obama’s popularity is below 50%.

I know you’re only trying to stir anger but, rest assured, Vega, a leech is more intelligent than you.

    *SLAP!*

Most liberals King, are un American POS’s who hate their country. People like PSO, who is on his 8th user name that we are aware of, spouts off like a conservative when he voted for and gave money to the Obama Campaign.

They lie, are racist/fascist want to be’s. And in fiza’s case, they are morons. Next thing you know, these people will claim Clinton was a conservative and Reagan a liberal.

  • Power_System_Oper

The vast majority of Republicans in Congress are flat out afraid to put before the voters a detailed plan of specific spending cuts that would balance the budget without having to raise taxes. That tells me all I need to know about those Republican Congressmen. It tells me that they are willing to throw principle and their conservative base under the bus in order to retain personal power.

I have to hand to the vast majority of Democrats in Congress. They are not afraid to put before the voters a detailed plan of specific spending increases. They at least are willing to put it on the line for their liberal base regardless of the consequences of upcoming elections.

If only conservatives had brave champions in Congress as do the liberals. If only….I won’t hold my breath.

You do realize that as long as the Democrats hold their current majorities in both House and Seante there is no way for any conservative measure to be voted on, acted on, or signed by Obama. Keep quoting your prepared cliches, and have a nice day.

Thanks for voting for Obama Power System Operator, aka hogground.

“One who lives in glass houses should not throw stones,” piglet. In other words, you have no right to talk about principle when you intentionally lie to everyone here by pretending that you’re not groundhog.

We all know it, at least have the guts to admit it.

“The LAST YEAR your so-called conservatives were in charge during the Bush (your hero) administration, congress attached a record 13,000+ earmarks to the spending bills.”

    Democrats in charge.

” What was the max number of earmarks during the great Clinton years? Approximately 1,000?”

    Republicans in charge.

And, Republicans were in control of Congress only 4 of the 8 years Bush was president.

How much ‘out-of-control’ spending can be traced to that…and Bush’s disinclination to veto.

  • http://networdblog.blogspot.com/ Christopher_Taylor

Yes, what happened to that party when they took over the White House, in addition to the congress, after the Clinton years.

They abandoned conservatism, which enraged us. They started acting like Democrats. And that’s partly why the Tea Party came into being. What’s your point again?

Wrong, again, jack! The REPUBLICANS were in charge when, in 2006, the REPUBLICAN congress attached a record 13,000+ earmarks to the REPUBLICAN controlled spending bills.

Furthermore, the REPUBLICANS controlled congress for 6 out of 8 years of the Bush administration. The Democrats did not take control of the Congress til Jan, 2007.
It never ceases to amaze me that the conservative websites and think tanks, for example, the Cato institute, attempt to blame the economic crisis on poor Rep. Frank and Sen. Chris Dodd, neither of whom had a lick of power until Jan 2007.

  • http://networdblog.blogspot.com/ Christopher_Taylor

How is he wrong that Republicans were only in power 4 of the 8 years of Bush’ preisdency? They held the house for 6 years, but the Senate and House only 4 years.

    QED

  • http://TheNixonTape.Blogspot.Com Dick_Nixon

Furthermore, the REPUBLICANS controlled congress for 6 out of 8 years of the Bush administration.

Incorrect. Try again dufus. It appears to Nixon that perhaps English is not your first language. What are the Polish words for “Republican does not equal conservative”, Kowalski?
