South Carolina Drops Out of Common Core Standardized Testing

South Carolina’s Superintendent of Education announced on Monday that the state is pulling out of Common Core standardized testing.

This Common Core deal is turning out to be a real dud, isn’t it?

Superintendent of Education Mick Zais sent a letter to state Board of Education members informing them of the move — after he learned he had the unilateral authority to do make it, PostAndCourier.com reports.

Zais was spurred to action by bills in the state legislature that, among other things, would prevent South Carolina from using the Smarter Balanced tests in schools.

The state was expected to begin using the Common Core-aligned Smarter Balanced tests during the 2014-15 school year. South Carolina students will still be tested on the new, nationalized math and English learning standards next year, but they may be given a re-worked version of the current state test or an alternative Common Core-aligned assessment, such as the ACT Aspire test.

As others have pointed out, every state that rejects Common Core is a loss for the people who want to create a uniform K-12 education system run by leftists in Washington. (As the mother of a toddler, I believe they want to go further than that, creating “universal” and eventually:  mandatory pre-K for children barely out of diapers. There’s also a push to extend the school day and eliminate summer vacations, giving them even more authority and influence over our children.) Let’s hope other states follow South Carolina’s lead and stop this march toward one-size-fits-all education run by a bloated bureaucracy.
