The Conservative “Eat Our Own” Brigade Turns On Alberto Gonzales

National Review is calling for Gonzales to be fired,

“The story of the eight fired U.S. attorneys has been relentlessly overhyped. We do not know that any of them was fired because the administration put its political interests ahead of his or her prosecutorial judgment. Sen. Dick Durbin’s recent insinuation that the attorneys who were not fired had kept their jobs by compromising their prosecutions was outrageous.

If congressional Democrats are wrong to bluster, however, they are within their rights to investigate. They may yet turn up enough evidence to prove that some of the firings were improper violations of political norms.

We do not need more evidence, however, to reach a conclusion about the suitability of Alberto Gonzales for the leadership of the Department of Justice. While we defended him from some of the outlandish charges made during his confirmation hearings, we have never seen evidence that he has a fine legal mind, good judgment, or managerial ability. Nor has his conduct at any stage of this controversy gained our confidence.”

Conservatives pride themselves on not blindly standing up for their own side. Yes, we’re not like the hypocritical Democrats who have no integrity and will defend their own side whether they’re KKK members, left a girl to drown to death, or got caught with 90k dollars worth of bribe money in their freezer.

Overall, this conservative tendency is a good thing because it helps get rid of people like Duke Cunningham and Mark Foley, so that they won’t taint the party as a whole. But, the flip side of it is that every time the left goes after someone, whether it’s merited or not, there is a mob of pitchfork wielding conservatives right there with them demanding their scalps and this is a perfect example of it.

Even National Review admits that it should essentially be a non-scandal, but because they don’t like Gonzales much anyway, they’re willing to just kick him under the bus whether he merits being fired or not. It doesn’t matter that Alberto Gonzales isn’t an elected politician, how popular he is really doesn’t matter, and that the same Democrats who want him fired now hated his guts before, he has just gotta go.

I don’t much care for Alberto Gonzales either, but I’m tired of kicking Republicans under the bus while Democrats are given a free pass for their behavior. Especially since it has gotten to the point where the Republicans don’t even really have to do anything wrong. The Democrats just gin up a scandal out of nothing, and they can still get conservatives to help them put the boots to other Republicans. It’s ridiculous.

So, National Review can say what they want, but Bush should ignore them, stick behind Gonzales, and relentlessly attack the Democrats for trying to turn this whole thing into a scandal.
