The Secret Constitutional Clause Exercise
Here’s a fun theoretical exercise I’ve been meaning to try for a while, but have deliberately (you’ll see why) not thought too much about in detail.
Let’s say, just for the heck of it, we found out that the Founders included a special clause in the Constitution that said on September 26, 2003 one person was allowed the powers of a benevolent dictator for just FIVE MINUTES. In those five minutes, he could unilaterally pass as many laws and constitutional Amendments as he saw fit — but only ones he could come up with in a five minute period. Then let’s suppose that there was a lottery held and you were the person allowed to make the selections. What would you do? What would you do…sorry, I watched “Speed” last night and that line was stuck in my head.
Then let’s say your time started at 12:24 PM and you couldn’t peak or look at any other issues…wait for it, wait for it, wait for it……go!
— A 2/3rds vote to pass a tax increase.
— A Balanced Budget amendment.
— Overturn the assault weapons ban.
— Overturn Roe Vs Wade & let the states vote on abortion.
— A Balanced Budget Amendment.
— A flat tax.
— Privatize a percentage of Social Security.
— Empower the police to pick up illegal aliens.
— Put troops on the borders.
— Set the baseline budget to inflation.
— An across the board spending cut 10% in every government program except ones related to intelligence, security, & police work.
— A nationwide school voucher program.
— Term limits for Congress — 8 years in the house, 12 in the Senate.
— Drill ANWR.
— Only 51 votes to get a judge through in the Senate.
That’s not a bad list although if I would have prepared, I’m sure I could have probably added another 10-15 ideas to it.
You should give this a try yourself. I think it’s a pretty good indicator of what issues are most important to a person and it’s also fun and educational…OK, fun & educational is a stretch, but it beats looking at Kim Jong-Il’s poofy hair or listening to Democrats claim that they’re being called unpatriotic by mysterious and unnamed members of the “Republican Machine”.
