This Cute Baby Animal has Become an Internet Sensation… Can You Guess What it is?
A photo that is both almost grotesque and strangely cute is burning up the internet. A man stopped when he saw a dead animal on the side of the road, and found this little girl with her mother, who had presumably been hit by a car.
The rescuer made an urgent phone call to a wildlife helpline in Kinglake, Victoria, and ranger Kim Hunter, 48, came racing out to take the baby home.
Despite being close to death, Kim managed to nurse the baby – she has called her Leah – back to health by bottle feeding her every four hours.
For those who have not guessed, it is a baby wombat.
Said Kim: “Leah was cold to the touch and weighed only 300 grams when she arrived, she now weighs 650 grams.
“She’s very lucky, although she was uninjured she was cold to the touch and I’d say she was only a few hours away from dying.
“Wombats often graze at the side of the road and are sometimes hit by oncoming cars. Her mother must have shielded her against the blow.
“Leah is too young to grow her own fur yet so I keep her on a heated mat, I have to bottle feed her every four hours, even throughout the night.
“But it’s definitely been worth it. We’ve built a strong bond over the weeks and she knows I’m her mum now.
“The online response to Leah is unbelievable. People have really fallen in love with her.”
So it’s a wombat! They’re a lot cuter when they don’t look like naked human-rat hybrids though.
