Veterans Day Thanks

As FDR once said, “those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them”. Too often, far too often, we here in America have forgotten or have at least minimalized the sacrifices made by the valiant men and women in the armed forces.

Our soldiers don’t make a lot of money, spend a lot of time away from their families, and may be called upon to risk their lives at anytime under some of the toughest conditions imaginable. During the Revolutionary War, shoeless patriots suffered a long, dark winter in the snow of Valley Forge. In WW2, our troops fought desperate battles against a ruthless and competent foe with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Today, the men and women in our armed forces spend their days dodging remote controlled bombs while chasing insurgents and terrorists in the blistering heat of Iraq’s Sunni Triangle.

Like our forefathers in the Revolutionary War who freed us from the Brits and the Greatest Generation that drove a dagger into the heart of the Axis, the soldiers who are today fighting on the front lines of the war on terrorism are performing a great service, not just for our country, but for humanity. As Ronald Reagan once said,

“I have seen the rise and fall of Nazi tyranny, the subsequent cold war and the nuclear nightmare that for fifty years haunted the dreams of children everywhere. During that time my generation defeated totalitarianism. As a result, your world is poised for better tomorrows. What will you do on your journey?”

Our generation is going to win the war on terrorism and our armed forces are the point of the spear. Let other people say what they like, but I could not be prouder of how our armed forces have performed and conducted themselves in the war on terrorism. So God bless the “rough men (doing) violence on (our) behalf” in Iraq & Afghanistan and all the other members of our military throughout our nation’s great history who have sacrificed so much fighting for freedom, fighting to protect our home.
