A Minnesota couple who collected $165,000 in government assistance had a $3 million fortune and lived on a yacht in Florida[1], it was revealed last week. Lady Andrea and Colin Chisholm, who are described as “Scottish aristocrats,” are now on the run from authorities.

The couple bilked taxpayers in two different states for seven years before anyone noticed, receiving free medical care and food stamps while collecting houses and sports cars. (Didn’t any red flags go up when “Lady Andrea” showed up to her free prenatal appointments in a shiny new Lexus?)

Colin Chisholm III, claims he is from a long line of Scottish aristocracy and is a wealthy broadcasting executive, according to court filings.

According to the criminal complaint filed in February, the Chisholms applied for more than a dozen forms of medical assistance, welfare payments and food stamps.

Lady Chisholm had her prenatal care for the couple’s son in 2006 paid for by the state while claiming to be desitute.

In the welfare applications, the couple allegedly lied about where they were living and who they were living with.

The Chisholms face up to 20 years in prison if caught. Since it took the government seven years to notice a welfare-fraud scheme this massive, who knows how much money we’re losing to other, smaller-scale cons?
