White 17th century Europeans weren’t just imperialistic racists, they were also…

…smokers!

Jamestown unearths 400-year-old pipes for patrons

RICHMOND, Va. – Archeologists at Jamestown have unearthed a trove of tobacco pipes personalized for a who’s who of early 17th century colonial and British elites, underscoring the importance of tobacco to North America’s first permanent English settlement.

Naturally, the rabidly right-wing Associated Press ignores this evidence of social and cultural evil and couches the story as some sort of important historical find:

The white clay pipes — actually, castoffs likely rejected during manufacturing — were crafted between 1608 and 1610 and bear the names of English politicians, social leaders, explorers, officers of the Virginia Company that financed the settlement and governors of the Virginia colony

Big Business! Big Finance!

The find comprises more than 100 pipes or fragments. More than a dozen are stamped with diamond shapes and inscribed with the names or initials of luminaries including explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, who dispatched the colonists to the territory he named Virginia. He also is credited with popularizing tobacco in England and is said to have smoked a pipe just before being executed for treason in 1618.

He was a smoker and a traitor! Coincidence?

How is this news? I’m mystified. Who didn’t know that people back then smoked?

And why is it on RWN? Am I supposed to cheer for smoking because nanny-staters don’t like it? It was and is a stupid activity.

I had a smoker corner me once and tell me long tales about how tobacco was such an important crop that helped make America. So what? So were slaves, and THAT was a monumentally stupid idea as well.

Who didn’t know that people back then smoked? A: there are a lot of stupid people in our country.
And why is it on RWN? A: Interesting story.
Am I supposed to cheer for smoking because nanny-staters don’t like it? A: If you feel so moved

There your questions are answered – I hope I cleared that up for you.

“Who didn’t know that people back then smoked? A: there are a lot of stupid people in our country.”

        To expand on this sentiment…

Not only are there as LOT of stupid people in our country, but liberal academia has also been busy glossing over those parts of history they disagree with.
Don’t like the idea of the Christian Religion and Tobacco being the driving motivator behind the vast majority of early New World settlements? Just teach ignore those facts, and teach that it was all due to over population pressures. That’s what one of my college History professors did.
Don’t like weapons and the Warrior Ethos? Just teach that ALL weapon technology is a result of criminal organizations attempting to gain the upper hand against police and civilization. That’s what one of my high school Civics teachers claimed.
Beyond that just skip over American and World History prior to 1960.

Hello, Virginia? Yeah, they smoked that spread pretty widely right after Europeans discovered America.

Hey, I enjoyed a Kentucky Cheroot cigar yesterday, made from Virginia and Kentucky tobacco!

It’s no surprise people smoked back then. Tobacco and other things as well.

It’s good to see you agree with the “imperialist racists” part though.

That’s just as stupid as calling Mexicans lazy. People are people, varying by each individual.

The colonists were imperialistic racists, replacing the indigenous imperialist racists.

What’s that? Brown folks can’t be racist or seek to exploit their neighbors for personal gain?

      Yeah, thought so.

    That’s pretty cool.

We need to get back in to smoking. It would cut social security/medicare costs (lung cancer is quicker/cheaper than living until you’re a hundred), reduce obesity, and make us look at least 45% cooler to other nations.

Also we are the worlds leader of tobacco production so it would mean more money and more jobs kept here.

    /only slightly joking.

Just for kicks: I remember reading about Sir Raleigh in an Encyclopedia when I was a kid, and it was said that his servant dumped a pitcher of water on his head while he was smoking, his servant thought he was on fire!!
Government will NEVER ban tobacco, it’s too big of a cash cow. Only about 85 cents to a Dollar of what one spends on a pack of cigarettes goes to the manufacurer, the rest is PURE TAX fron the Feds as well as State and local entities. Yes, out of the $5-something for a pack of Marlboros or Newports, $4-something goes to government, and the smokers pay them for the privilege of tarring their lungs. [wannabe] Emperor Obama raised the cost of a pack of cigs by a Dollar as part of his healthcare hustle, and who smokes the most? Lower income people, just who he said he wasn’t going to raise taxes on, yet another promise broken.
