Today may have marked another turning point in the Presidential Campaign of 2012. Mitt Romney went to Houston, Texas today to address the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People with one goal in mind, to open up the audience’s eyes, ears, and skeptical minds by speaking the hard truth. Barack Obama and the Democrat Party’s policies are hurting the Black community.
The truth sometimes is supposed to hurt and Mitt Romney stuck the needle filled with truth serum deep inside the vein of every single member of the audience. He eloquently administered the first shot in curing them from their life long suffering of a truly debilitating disease known as liberalism. He did not tap dance around the issues, or use talking points or slogans; instead he confronted them head on and forced them to listen. He told the audience exactly what they did not want to hear, but what they needed to hear.
This article was inspired by today’s events, however is about much more then one man’s speech. It is about how to change the hearts and minds of people who are oppressed, and do not even know it.
The African American community for far too long has been brainwashed into believing that the Republican Party is a racist party and doesn’t care for the plight of African Americans. This could not be farther from the truth. What is true is that the Democrat Party is much better then the Republican Party at the art of message manipulation and hiding the facts under the guise of discrimination and racism.
The disease known as liberalism is like a cancer that eats away at the very heart of a nation. Like cancer, it can be hard to detect and is a master of deception. Much like a chameleon it has the ability to hide in plain sight. It has metastasized itself into the bloodstream of every unsuspecting and unprepared host it can find. For the Democrat Party to survive, it needs liberalism to continue to infect more and more minorities, especially African Americans.
The Democrat Party has survived the last 40 to 50 years not on their sound fiscal ideas or family oriented philosophies, but rather on an uninformed, disengaged, and distracted electorate. They have used envy, class warfare, lies, and victimization to control an entire segment of society by keeping them in the dark and not allowing them to see the light.
When rational independent thinking African Americans happen to escape the political confines of the Democrat plantation, they are eviscerated, ridiculed, and often called names like Uncle Toms. As I have mentioned in previous articles an educated, well informed, African American voter to a Democrat is like what Kryptonite was to Superman.
The Democrat Party has been on the wrong side of history when it comes to African Americans and their civil rights, yet somehow manage to still receive almost 90% of the black vote? This statistic amazes me considering that the Democrat Party was the party that ruled African Americans were only 3/5th of a person and would never be granted citizenship.

One of the principles that the Republican Party was founded upon was an Anti-Slavery platform. History has shown that the Democrat Party was the party that fought against the abolition of slavery. Did African Americans forget that Abraham Lincoln, a Republican abolished slavery? Did they skip the chapter in the history books that shows that Jim Crow Laws were enacted by the Democrats? Do they not realize that the awful Dred Scott decision was ruled upon by a Democratic Majority? With this type of history, it is mind boggling that so many African Americans vote for Democrats.
For this political anomaly to change, prominent African American leaders will need to continue to educate the Black community on how the Democrat Party’s policies are holding them back as a people from a socio-economic standpoint. This won’t be an easy task considering how long African Americans have been taught not to vote Republican, but it is a conversation worth having.
Historically speaking, there has been a number of prominent Republicans of African American descent. The great orator, statesman, and former slave Frederick Douglass once famously quipped, “I am a Republican, a black, dyed in the wool Republican, and I never intend to belong to no other party then the party of freedom and progress.”
Moreover, in her book, A Covenant of Life: Reclaiming MLK’s Legacy, Dr. Alveda C. King, said this about her late, great uncle, “My Grandfather, Dr. Martin Luther King Sr. was a Republican, and so was his son, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Dr. King was pro family, pro church, and believed that all men should be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
From Eldridge Cleaver, Harriet Tubman, and Booker T. Washington to Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice, and Allen West, there are plenty of examples of prominent African American Republicans for Black voters to emulate and look up to. The Republican Party needs to continue to remind Black voters that not only are these people Republicans; but more importantly that what they stood for and continue to believe in are the guiding principles that as a community African Americans more closely align with.
As a community, African Americans tend to be more pro life, believe in the definition of traditional marriage, and long for the strength and unity of the nuclear family. Judging by these characteristics you would think they would naturally vote for Republicans, but unfortunately this has not been the case.
As Conservatives, and Republicans it is our duty to counsel, educate, and converse with our African American friends and colleagues. We need to compare and contrast the policies between the two parties in a calm, respectful, and intelligent way. We need to show them how the Democrat Party holds them in economic slavery by strapping the chains of government to their backs. We must teach them in the simplest terms that Democrats want to feed them a fish so they only eat for a day, and Republicans want to teach them how to fish so they can feed themselves and their families. If we can show them that the Republican Party is the party of liberty, freedom, equality, and opportunity then they will reject liberalism because at its core it is not based in freedom, it is based on dependency.
If each of us can change just one person’s mind we can make a substantial contribution to freedom and liberty. The Democrats know that if they lose as little as 15-20% of the Black vote it is essentially game over for them. Republicans can reverse this trend and make long lasting inroads in the Black community, not just for the political gain, but more importantly for a better America.
