U.N. May Declare Use Of Drones Illegal
Written By : William Teach

So much for the Biden plan (BTW, did you know Biden is polling way lower than Cheney did?), because the United Nations has no other areas around the world where human rights are violated

A U.N. human rights investigator warned the United States Tuesday that its use of unmanned warplanes to carry out targeted executions may violate international law.

Philip Alston said that unless the Obama administration explains the legal basis for targeting particular individuals and the measures it is taking to comply with international humanitarian law which prohibits arbitrary executions, “it will increasingly be perceived as carrying out indiscriminate killings in violation of international law.”

Alston, the U.N. Human Rights Council’s investigator on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions, raised the issue of U.S. Predator drones in a report to the General Assembly’s human rights committee and at a news conference afterwards, saying he has become increasingly concerned at the dramatic increase in their use, especially in Afghanistan and Pakistan, since June.

We know how Progressives like Obama love kowtowing to folks at the UN (witness the allowing of human rights inspectors in our major cities regarding housing), so, what will Dear Leader do? This might give him the out in seems to desperately want, after all his campaign promises, without appearing weak (too late!) In fact, it might give him the out he probably wants to abandon the War on Terrorism, er, excuse me, Operation Overseas Contingency. The far left Progressives who form the base of the Democrat Party, and are, one could argue, the actual middle point for the Party, mostly want to abandon Afghanistan and the WoT, and have for a long time.

So, this is a test for the Bamster. Despite the reticence to commit to the troop surge in Afghanistan and renaming the WoT, as well as some pretty speeches, he has actually done a decent job, mostly out of the public eye. He escalated drone strikes not only in Afghanistan, but in Pakistan. He has stuck with the Bush plan to leave Iraq. He has kept rendition. Gitmo is nowhere close to being closed. Will he listen to the UN, or tell them to go fly a metal kite in a thunderstorm?

"Will he listen to the UN, or tell them to go fly a metal kite in a thunderstorm?"

Do you really need to ask?

  • BIG

Using drones is against international law, but firing rockets into civilian areas is not? Using UN funded schools as launch sites for these attacks is also legal under their international law. Maybe if the PLO-Arabs had drones, the UN would find them legal?

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? …

Who cares? The Smurfs are just paid rapists and molesters. We should not give one whit what they think.

What is the difference between a bullet from a sniper rifle or a bomb from a drone? Dead is dead.

When the UN gets around to denouncing human bombs, the killing of innocent children (25 in a bus in Iran by the last two explosions), the lobbing of rockets from Hamas and Co sites into civilian sites, then maybe it might be correct to pay attention.

    Until then, no.

Afghan is a republican fiasco left for Obama to clean up. According to Terri Gross' interview with a NYT reporter held hostage the drones are creating more people that hate us than they are doing us good militarily.

More republican shit for the dems to dispose of. You love war but you're fight is weak.

  • William Teach

    Yet, Jack

    A. Al Qaeda attacked the US out of Afghanistan.

    B. Democrats publicly state they support the war in Afghanistan

    C. Obama has publicly stated he supports the war in Afghanistan

    D. Obama has ratcheted up the drone strikes.

But, of course, I never did expect you to comment on topic, Jack.

    - jack Schitehead

No, Schitehead: Afghanistan is the "War of Necessity," the "Good War," remember?

And ironically enough, it's OBAMA that luvs using drones even more than Bush did, because it allows him to keep casualties down. Nothing wrong with that at all, but just stop pretending Bush had any choice BUT to invade Afghanistan, and stop pretending Liberal San Francisco Lefties have any idea of how to handle Afghanistan better than Bush did.

If if I believed this, I'd trade one dead existing America hating terrorist leader for 100 new non-leaders any day.

Wow. So they hate us enough when we dont fight them, and that got us 9/11. And now your saying they hate us for fighting them. So what can we do? Bend over and spread cheek? Or how about we just die already and let the caliphate take over? We arent allowed to fight and we arent allowed to not fight.

And just for the record, you have noticed that everything we do to protect ourselves make them(the people that are war with us) hate us more. Good. Must mean we are making progress. And by the way, there arent an unlimited number of haters out there. Eventually we will kill them all, with a little backbone ofcourse.

    Let's think this thru.

    1. NY Time reporter is held hostage by the Taliban.

    2. Said reporter is allowed to give an interview by the Taliban.

    3. Said Taliban will only allow said reporter to say things that are in the Taliban's interest.

    4. Said Taliban wants us to know that killing them will cost us the war.

    5. Jack Schithehead is an abject blathering imbecile.

There, that was easy! These sort of mental exercises are always useful.

  • tblrk2006

Im sorry to respond to JS again but are people, seriously, still trying to play that "makes more terrorists" card? Imagine, if you will, that for every American hero killed fighting these muslims, another American loving hero was "made" that would continue to kill terrorists on 20-1 scale. Wow.

  • http://www.superdickery.com mightysamurai

This is hilarious. The UN complains constantly about war casualties. You'd think they'd be happy about a method of warfare that effectively halves potential casualties.

Oh wait, drones only reduce the American casualty rates, don't they? It all makes sense now…

  • Mike_M

"So they hate us enough when we dont fight them, and that got us 9/11. And now your saying they hate us for fighting them. So what can we do?"

This is the problem with Obama. Not many liked Bush but the rest of the world respected the USA with him calling the shots because he wasn't afraid to bring out the whoopin' stick. Getting Pakistan on board the War on Terror while keeping India happy at the same time was a titanic and vastly underrated feat. It's also often overlooked that Libya bailed on their nuclear program voluntarily after the Iraq War, saving us from another Iran scenario (partial credit to Reagan).

Obama is like the girl that sleeps around to get into the popular clique. Yeah, the guys want to hang out but everybody is laughing behind your back. Obama's bedfellows read like a most wanted list: Zelaya, Ahmadenijad, Castro, Putin, Chavez. Meanwhile he's thrown away our relationship with Pakistan, alienated Britain (which will be an Islamic country itself soon), thrown democracy under the bus in Iran and Honduras, and is putting Israel on death ground (read your Sun Tzu).

Now Mr. Popularity's paralysis and indecision at a critical junction is costing lives in Afghanistan, jeopardizing two countries (Pakistan as well), and the safety of this one. Weeks have gone by and he's still voting "present".

  • Mike_M

"Oh wait, drones only reduce the American casualty rates, don't they? It all makes sense now…"

Yeah, kind of like how the UN is cool with Palestinians launching rockets into Jewish neighborhoods, but trying to prosecute the IDF for war crimes and use of WMD for using White Phosphorus shells for smokescreens to protect its troops in operations to dismantle the afforementioned rocket launch sites.

The simple and obvious solution is to stencil the "Miranda warning" on the nose of every Hellfire missile, so we can't be accused of not giving fair warning and observing everyones' rights.

  • CoolCzech

The simplest and most obvious solution of all is to pull the plug on US participation in the UN, and to restrain future American presidents from ever foisting such idiotic ideas on the world again.

  • CoolCzech

Maybe Obama could come up with a winning strategy for Afghanistan sooner if he *cough* devoted a bit more time to the problem:

    (c/o WSJ.com)

    Politico reports:

Obama has only been in office for just over nine months, but he's already hit the links as much as President Bush did in over two years. CBS' Mark Knoller–an unofficial documentarian and statistician of all things White House-related–wrote on his Twitter feed [Saturday] that, "Today – Obama ties Pres. Bush in the number of rounds of golf played in office: 24. Took Bush 2 yrs & 10 months."

    Yes, we can!

  • Bill_Dalasio

This sort of mentality is hardly new from the international community. As far back as 2001 I remember posting on the FT site. Interestingly, FT has a good many Europeans of the progressive variety. An attitude commonly expressed there was a distaste for America's use of high-tech weaponry. The underlying rationale (sometimes foolishly expressed openly) was that the use of such weapons was "unsporting" in that it gave the user a disproportionate advantage and put them at minimal risk in attacking their opponents. Notably, such comments were most common from posters in nations safely behind America's defensive shield. I recall commenting a number of times that there was a more than a little irony in the fact that the citizenry of countries most inclined to loudly and self-righteously remind us that "war is not a game" seemed the most eager to apply the rules of sport to combat.

Seeing as how Jack Off always just flings his feces and then runs away, maybe we'd all be better off if everyone just ignored his worthless trollish ass. Just a thought.

No, no, no. You're not getting it, BIG. Hamas et al are freedom fighters – noble heroes willing to give their lives in the fight to win freedom and the opportunity for prosperity for their people. Nothing a freedom fighter does is ever wrong or illegal because it's in service of freedom. They are by definition beyond reproach. That's why unguided missiles which rain random terror on a civilian population are legal and legitimate whereas a drone guided by a trained mission specialist who's watching the ground environment through the cameras, radar and infrared sensors on the craft (s)he is piloting can be an illegal hot mess.

Good point martin. I'm sure the UN will resond by outlawing fighter jets and tanks as well because they're unfair to the terrorists. They'll probably repeal the Geneva Conventions as well because they favor organized armies over cave dwelling savages.

Attending boot camp will be a war crime, but loading a baby carriage with C4 and blowing up a preschool (preferably Jewish but any one full of white people will do) will be heartily endorsed by the UN.

  • BIG

The UN has been one of the biggest supporters of terorism over the past forty years. They did a study on refugees back in the early fifties and the PLO-Arabs were 1 in 72 of the world's refugees. Today, not one of the other 71 are still refugees but the PLO-Arabs numbers continue to expand because they are under a different set of rules from every other refugee in the world. The PLO-Arabs have UNRWA which supplies about 70% of the jobs to the PLO-Arabs. The PLO-Arabs have become the biggest welfare queens history has ever seen. If they really wanted to solve the PLO-Israeli conflict, the first thing they should do is abolish UNRWA and place the PLO-Arab refugees under UNHCR and give them the same rules as any other refugee in the world. First off by doing this, the number of refugees would be instantly reduced to under 60,000 and since the youngest of this group would be at least 60 years of age, the clock would be ticking for them to make a deal before the number becomes zero.

But since they are the only refugees in the world that consider children born to refugees, their numbers will keep expanding for the next thousand years. If they really wanted to end the conflict instead of ending Israel, this would be the road to take.

  • CoolCzech

You think it would send the “wrong message” to the UN if a drone “accidentally” sent a Hellfire missile straight thru the dome of the General Assembly in New York?

I think it would be the best thing to happen at the UN since 1945.

President Obama is waiting until after the November elections to make his decision public on Afghanistan. But it is racist of me to imply that politics has anything to do with his decision making.

  • Mike_M

It’s called war. We’re not using drones to conduct police activities or even interdictions of people like drug smugglers or pirates. We’re using them to blow up terrorists and partisan combatants on the field of battle. According to the Geneva Conventions we could be lining these guys up and executing them while being legally and morally in the right.

Just further proof the UN is anti-American, anti-Western, and increasingly anti-civilization. They seem overwhelmingly eager to hand the world over to 7th century zealots.
