Miss South Carolina, Asked About Gun Control, Knocked The Question Out Of The Park

Perhaps this is why she didn’t win, though we like her just fine.

In another example of why beauty pageants are becoming more and more unwatchable, Miss South Carolina Daja Dial was accosted with a question about gun control at the Miss America pageant – with the obvious expectation she’d give a standard media-friendly liberal answer.

That didn’t happen[1]…

The question about gun control came from Amy Purdy, who said, “America loves our Second Amendment, but gun violence continues to be a tragic problem. Do you support a ban on military-style assault weapons?”

Dial responded[2]:

I don’t [support such a ban]…we need to increase education. We have to go back there. If we teach people the proper way to use guns,  then we will reduce the risk of having gun-related accidents. It starts with education.

Shortly thereafter, the Miss America Organization used a Facebook post[3] to be sure everyone knew Miss South Carolina opposed an “assault weapons” ban.

The vast majority of the people agitating for a ban on “assault weapons” have no idea what kinds of guns they’re even talking about, and they certainly don’t have a clue how much violence actually comes from people using military-style weapons. Gun violence is almost universally practiced with handguns, most of which are already illegal under current laws.

The Miss America pageant is now more or less a glorification of stupid people who look good on TV[4], which is not a particular attack on the pageant. After all, increasingly that’s a description both of the news media and pop culture; there is no reason why beauty pageants should be any different.

Daja Dial rose above that, which probably cost her a victory. Never mind that; as far as we’re concerned she did just fine.
