Obama to free mass amounts of prisoners before leaving White House?

Assistant to the President for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Lisa Monaco is saying the president will not release a mass amount of prisoners… I don’t think I believe her. If Obama doesn’t do so by Executive Order, it will be a major failing for his stated agenda. Frankly, I think he’s done more than enough damage. He’s released many of those who helped kill Americans on 9/11 and others who have gone back to kill infidels. He traded five of them for the treasonous Muslim convert, Bowe Bergdahl. If he doesn’t close Gitmo, it won’t be for lack of trying.

The promise to empty Gitmo was a Day 1 promise by Obama. He’s done his level best to bring it about much to the horror of Americans. He’s now begging Trump to close it down. Not a chance in Hell. In fact, Trump has vowed to keep it open for business. Guantanamo Bay may be mostly emptied out, but it won’t be closed. Trump has plans for it for the war on terror and our enemies. But I still wouldn’t be surprised in the last days of his administration if Obama didn’t pull something like trying to shut Gitmo down. That’s just how he rolls.

President Barack Obama’s top counterterrorism adviser appeared to rule out Friday any dramatic action by President Barack Obama to shut down the prison at Guantanamo Bay before he leaves office, essentially acknowledging that his promise to close the detention facility on his watch will not be fulfilled.

Some liberal groups have urged Obama to keep his vow making a unilateral move to transfer the remaining prisoners to the U.S. in the coming weeks. Closure advocates, including two lawyers who formerly worked on the issue for Obama, claim he has executive authority under the Constitution to ignore a congressionally-imposed ban on bringing Gitmo inmates to U.S. soil.

Congressional Republicans have also expressed concerns Obama might take such an action in his closing days in office.

However, Assistant to the President for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Lisa Monaco signaled Friday that Obama has no plans to buck those restrictions, even though he strongly disagrees with them.

“At the end of the day, the domestic transfer restriction remains in place, so until Congress lifts that we’re not able to bring detainees here even to serve a life sentence, even to undergo prosecution to render a life sentence, so those restrictions remain in place,” Monaco told reporters at a discussion arranged by the Christian Science Monitor. “There will be some number that remain, an absent an ability and a lifting of the Congressional restrictions to bring them to the United States, they will remain in Guantanamo.”

There are some imprisoned at Gitmo that just can’t be released, regardless of what Obama wants to do. They include the five 9/11 plotters, led by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. There are five others that are considered “unreleasable.” But there are still dozens of others that Obama could release or offload on other countries. That will be hard to do because what is left there is the worst of the worst.

From Hot Air:

The Pentagon said on Sunday that it had sent a Yemeni detainee from the wartime prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to Cape Verde, the island nation off the west coast of Africa. It was the first transfer from the prison since the election victory last month by Donald J. Trump, who vowed during the campaign to reverse President Obama’s effort to close Guantánamo.

The man, Shawki Awad Balzuhair, had been imprisoned without trial for more than 14 years. His departure reduced the detainee population to 59, of whom 20 are recommended for transfer.

Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter recently gave a 30-day notice to Congress that eight detainees on that list would be transferred several weeks from now, according to officials who discussed the notices on the condition of anonymity because they are not yet public.

Trump has said he will reverse Obama’s policy on Gitmo and “load it up with some bad dudes.” Here’s to hoping he does just that.
