Obama: Plenty Of Time For Obama To Campaign In 2011

Good thing there’s nothing happening in the world. As Libya and Japan burn, as we have massive uprisings through the Arab world, Obama played golf[1] and hit the Gridiron dinner[2] (something he skipped the first two years, but, he’ll need, as Dana Perino said, his compliant media’s help in 2012). He penned an op-ed[3] in the Arizona Daily Star on “common sense gun reform” (say, how’d gun reform work in his hometown of Chicago?). His weekly address[4] was on Women’s History Month and fair pay. And he’s outlining a fix[5] for Ted Kennedy’s No Child Left Behind. And then there is this[6]

Early last month, President Obama addressed 1,000 people at Penn State about his ideas for reviving the country’s economy. A couple of weeks later, he delivered a similar address to about 100 small-business owners at Cleveland State University.

But it was what Obama did offstage and away from the news cameras at the schools, before groups of about a dozen at a time, that was perhaps more important to his campaign for reelection.

At the universities – both of which are in politically important states – the president popped unexpectedly into nondescript campus conference rooms, surprising small groups of students who had responded to invitations to meet with mid-level White House aides.

Twenty months before Election Day, and even before the president officially opens his campaign office, Obama and his White House team are launching a number of efforts to reconnect with the young voters who were among his most fervent supporters in 2008 – but who have soured somewhat on the president since.

Remember back just a few months ago, when Obama said[7] “My hope is that John Boehner and Mitch McConnell will realize that there will be plenty of time to campaign for 2012 in 2012. And that our job this year is to make sure that we build on recovery.” Team Obama has plans for around 100 round tables with college kids this spring alone. Which means more unnecessary fossil fueled campaign trips on Air Force One. But, of course, Obama Pronouncements are for others, not himself.

This is what Obama leadership looks like. Of course, the less time he spends involved in governance, the less damage he can do to the country.
