What If The Supreme Court Shot Down Obamacare? (Q&A Friday #108)

by John Hawkins | November 18, 2011 1:44 pm

Question: If the Supreme Court overturns the constitutionality of the individual health insurance mandate next spring, how will that effect the 2012 elections? — President Friedman

Answer: It would be wonderful news for Obama because not only is the bill very unpopular, it’s 2014 full implementation date is going to be a major factor in driving Republicans to the polls. If the SCOTUS took it off the table, he wouldn’t have to defend the bill anymore and Republicans would have less motivation to vote.

PS: If the individual health insurance mandate were found to be unconstitutional, the bill becomes completely unworkable, but Obama, being Obama, might try to find a way to implement the rest of it anyway. If he did that, I think it could conceivably be even worse for him electorally than it is now.
