Hot off the press and selling like hot-cakes, this new bio profiles the journey of an ambitious young man from South Africa who has already founded billion-dollar companies in three radically different industries: cars, rockets, and solar power. Next up: batteries. At the ripe young age of 43, Musk’s story should definitely be next up on your Amazon Kindle Wish List. Speaking of which…

2) The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon[3] by Brad Stone (2013)

If you don’t count the Walton heirs (see book #11), Jeff Bezos is one of the 10 richest people in the world. How did he make his $40 billion? By leaving a high-paying investment banking job on Wall Street in his 20s to invest in a dream: building a store to sell EVERYTHING. Amazon, originally named Cadabra.com, is one of the few businesses that would survive the dot-com bubble bust and usher in a new age of savvy realpolitik in the retail industry (just ask Barnes & Noble…).

3) Steve Jobs[4] by Walter Isaacson (2011)

The world mourned when the founder of Apple passed away. We’ve been die-hard fans ever since the first time he dared us to “put a dent in the universe”. He demanded perfection from underlings, who routinely built cutting-edge tools to help us experience the world in new ways. Ironically, though Jobs was infamous for being stingy with philanthropy, he designed a plethora of platforms that so much of our charity depends on today. He seemed to never lose sight of the most important things – especially “how to live before you die”[5], the title of his renowned speech at the 2005 Stanford commencement.
