Cancer-Stricken Actor Val Kilmer Tells Americans Potency Of ‘Power of Prayer’ – It Goes Viral

Val Kilmer, known for playing Batman and holding roles in films such as Top Gun, is now crediting prayer with his cancer remission. I respect that. In our hour of need, we turn to God and prayer. It can do miraculous things.

Kilmer, a Christian Scientist, has gone from denying that he ever had an issue with his health, to now speaking publicly about how he feels he was cured due to the power of prayer, saying that it’s as “potent today as it was in Jesus’ time.” I wholeheartedly agree with that.

We reported on Kilmer’s health back in April of this year, when he participated in a popular online forum using the common “Ask Me Anything” question and answer threat. That marked the first time that he had publicly discussed his health situation, saying that he spent months denying to himself that he was in poor health. There had been a rumor started inadvertently by actor Michael Douglas who said that Kilmer had terminal cancer, because Kilmer approached him for a recommendation for a specialist. Years ago, Douglas himself was diagnosed with tongue cancer and last November, he gave an interview saying that his prayers were with Kilmer, letting it slip that he too had cancer and that was why “you haven’t heard much from Val lately,” calling him a “wonderful guy.”[2]

When Michael Douglas let that information out, Kilmer posted on his Facebook page denying that he had cancer, only “a lump in my throat.” He has faced rough criticism that he wasn’t being honest in prior remarks about his rumored illness, but explained his answers to Mike Fleming Jr. of Deadline Hollywood. “The first time I was asked if I had cancer, I answered truthfully that I had no cancer. As I hadn’t,” Kilmer said. “If they had asked, ‘Have you had cancer?’ I would have said, ‘Yes, but it’s all healed now.’” Kilmer doesn’t see this as dishonesty, but a statement of faith. “Somehow I was accused of not being forthright,” he said. “Well, if years ago I had broken a leg and I was asked today if I have any broken bones, I would answer just as I did the cancer question: ‘No, I don’t have any.’”

In the “Ask Me Anything” question and answer, Kilmer confirmed that he did have cancer and that he had a “healing of cancer.”

Kilmer, in an interview, said that people have made “extraordinary assumptions” when it came to speculating about his beliefs about how prayer helped him heal. The body is complex and can be a “complete mystery.”

What still is a mystery is the nature of Kilmer’s cancer. He hasn’t divulged the type of cancer, or how serious it was. Only that he had indeed had cancer, but that it’s healed now. He said that he was afraid of what he didn’t understand and is now recovering from side effects saying that his voice still doesn’t quite sound the same. It is widely assumed that he had throat cancer.

Kilmer said:

“I’m so grateful I’ve experienced firsthand what consistent prayer and love can offer.”

Going back to the “Ask Me Anything,” commenters expressed worry that his religious beliefs would interfere with his recovery, but he said that “people that know I am a Christian Scientist make the assumption that I have somehow endangered myself,” stating that “many, many people have been healed by prayer through recorded history” and “many, many people have died by whatever was modern medicine.” Faith can heal far more than hurt in instances like Kilmer’s. He denied his views make him an extremist, as some critics allege, but acknowledged that he follows Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy’s leadership regarding the healing power of prayer and love. I see nothing wrong with that and it is Kilmer’s choice to make. That does not make him an extremist.

“That’s what I tell all the interns. LOVE. Love heals,” he wrote. “More than any other skills, I urge them to LOVE the life they are entrusted to save. Well that’s what is at the heart of Mrs. Eddy’s understanding of the teachings of Jesus.” I am a Christian as well, although I am not a Christian Scientist. But I agree with Kilmer here… love and faith can cure a multitude of ills and it’s done so for him.
