Clint Eastwood has broken new ground in his new movie “The 15:17 to Paris.” The movie tells the story of three Americans and their involvement in stopping a terrorist attack on a train from Belgium to France in 2015. He cast the three heroes as themselves in the movie, which is a pretty remarkable move.
Variety magazine calls the move to cast the three Americans as themselves as unprecedented.
The Americans in question are Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos and Spencer Stone. The three Americans, aged 23, 22 and 23, respectively, star in the film stylized version of the actual events that led to their heroism. Skarlatos and Stone are both members of the United States military and the movie depicts their intervention when Ayoub el-Khazzani, an Islamic terrorist, opened fire on a the France bound train with a total of 554 passengers on board.
Eastwood based his movie on the book version of events “The 15:17 to Paris: The True Story of a Terrorist, a Train, and Three American Heroes,” written by the three men with the help of Jeffrey E. Stern.
The film follows the events of the men’s lives and highlights their achievements and the things that prepared them for that fateful afternoon against the Islamic terrorist.
At the time, the BBC reported that El-Khazzani was armed with heavy firepower when he boarded the train. On the way to the restroom, a French passenger discovered the intent of El-Khazzani and a gun went off during the ensuing encounter. The shot reportedly injured a different passenger.
Within a few minutes, the three Americans leaped into action and were part of the brigade who took down El-Khazzani.
In an interview with CBS, Skarlatos explained that his reaction was a “gut instinct.”
Stone told CBS in the interview that the assailant was “ready to fight to the end.” He added that he and his friends were just as ready to see things until the end as well in order to stop the terrorist.
The men were awarded the Legion of Honor for their bravery, the highest award France can offer.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Eastwood said the movie highlights the bravery of the common man. He was asked about casting the Americans as themselves in the move to which he responded it would be “an interesting experiment.” He also said the faces of the men were unique and there was something about them that warranted casting them as themselves.
“The 15:17 to Paris” is in the same mold as other Eastwood movies such as “American Sniper,” which focuses on real-life acts of heroism. Clint Eastwood himself is a real life act of heroism as he doesn’t kowtow to leftist bull. A true American hero.
What do you think about Eastwood using real-life heroes in this movie? Is it really cool or is it a risky gamble?
