At what point do black Americans start to ask the Democratic Party to: do something for them in return for their votes?
Today’s 14.1 percent black unemployment rate is almost twice the 7.4 percent white rate, and the racial gap – after narrowing from 2005 to 2009 – has widened since the recession’s June 2009 end. At Obama’s inauguration, 7.1 percent of whites were jobless compared with 12.7 percent of blacks.
: …Amid a fitful economic recovery over the past three years, black households’ median annual income fell 11.1 percent, more than twice the 5.2 percent inflation-adjusted decline suffered by white households, according to an analysis of Census Bureau data by Sentier Research.
…Not according to his Republican challenger. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney told the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in July that blacks were suffering more than other groups. “If you want a president who will make things better in the African- American community, you are looking at him,” Romney said.
Isn’t it likely that Mitt Romney is right? You have to think the economy would improve much more under him than Obama and that improvement would disproportionately help black Americans since they’re disproportionately suffering economically. Doesn’t Mitt Romney have a position on issues like abortion and gay marriage that’s much more in line with the attitudes of black Americans than Obama? Sadly, there are apparently a lot of black Americans who’d rather be jobless and have a black President than have a white Republican President and a job. We have millions of black Americans who’d rather cross God by throwing their religious beliefs under the bus than cross the Democratic Party that’s running roughshod over those beliefs.
Black Americans are 100% taken for granted by the Democratic Party. A few Democrats show up in black churches right before election day, talk about how much they love black people, and claim that Republicans are racists. Then those same Democrats write black Americans off until it’s time to have another election. Republicans certainly could be doing a MUCH better job on the outreach front, but if black Americans ever want to be fought over the way Hispanic voters are, they must become less monolithic and start voting on performance, not just party and skin color.
