The former British Prime Minister: has this right.
“If I were you, I would sort of give up on being loved,” Blair said today on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “If that’s your ambition as still the world’s greatest power, give up on it, because it’s not going to happen.”
America is not, never has been, and never will be “loved” by the rest of the world. Nations don’t have friendships; they have interests. The problem is that when you’re the most powerful nation in the world, it’s in the INTEREST of most other nations to see you knocked down a peg or two. In other words, if you’re hoping we’re going to “be besties” with other nations, you’re hoping in vain. It doesn’t matter how many people we free from tyranny, how much money we give away, or how many people we help. Ultimately, it’s not going to be appreciated.
Tony Blair understands this. We should, too.
