After police in Ohio discovered a tiny boy trying to sell his teddy bear to strangers so he could buy a meal, what “heartbroken” officers found at the boy’s home led to his mother and father being arrested for child abuse.

A Franklin, Ohio, police officer discovered the little seven year-old boy wandering around the streets trying to raise money for a meal because, the boy said, he hadn’t eaten anything in days, according to the Daily Mail[1].

“It broke my heart,” Officer Steve Dunham told the media. “He told me he was trying to sell his stuffed animal to get money for food because he hadn’t eaten in several days.”

The officer bought the child a meal, but when officials took the boy home, what they found there enraged them.

Officer Steve Dunham took the boy to Subway – but it wasn’t until two other officers appeared at his home in Franklin, Ohio, that they realized he had been living among garbage, cat urine and liquor bottles.

Parents Tammi and Michael Bethel, who told police they didn’t realize their son had gone missing, have been charged with five counts of child endangerment each.

But after police charged her, the mother jumped onto the police department’s Facebook page to defend herself…

She wrote: ‘I can also post pictures that I randomly took from January to August and it shows my house clean.

‘The cop just popped up on the wrong day I hadn’t had a chance to clean the mess that all them kids had made…

‘BTW my kids didn’t even eat the food that the cops brought them because they had just ate.

She also added: ‘Another BTW I could throw a rock from my house and hit CVS where my son was at. He goes down there all the time with his brothers.’

Despite all her protestations, though, this is what police found when they entered the home…

The couple lost their five children after police found the above house of filth. The two adults have been barred from seeing the children until the child neglect charges are adjudicated.
