The details are still rolling on on just what happened to a Fox Lake police officer who was shot and killed late this morning after radioing in that he was pursuing three suspicious suspects on foot. But we know he is dead and now a manhunt is underway in the northrn suburb.
The officer was shot this morning after finding three suspicious characters whom he began to pursue on foot. His communication with the dispatcher ended and he was later found lying on the ground shot and dying. His gun and other of his equipments had been taken by the suspects.
The officer, who has not yet been publicly identified, later died at the hospital.
Now the manhunt is on…
Police established a perimeter and sent helicopters into the air as they sought three suspects, described only as one black male and two white males, Rose said. Several canine units were also dispatched, as well as SWAT teams in camouflage.
With the help of U.S. marshals, teams of police from throughout the county were searching woods and businesses throughout the area.
“If (residents) see anybody in their area … that doesn’t belong or doesn’t look right, they should call 911,” Rose said.
Michael Drewer, 35, of Fox Lake, owner of the Dipstick Oil Change, now surrounded by yellow police tape, said there were a half-dozen officers blocking off roads at Sayton Road and Route 12 when he arrived at work in the morning.
“Then a half-hour later, (the number of police) ballooned quite a bit,” he said. “They checked our security video and then told me I wouldn’t be doing any business today.”
Covelli said the suspects should be considered dangerous and advised residents to stay indoors if possible.
