Late on Sunday morning the war on cops continued as at least one man opened fire on officers near the Baton Rouge, Louisiana police headquarters. Three were killed on the scene and several more were taken to the hospital.
The details are still sketchy, but it appears that the officers walked into a major fire fight. There may be more than one shooter, too.
UPDATE:
Three law enforcement are confirmed dead, three others injured. One suspect is dead, law enforcement believes two others may be at large. Asking the public if they see anything suspicious please call 911 immediately.
At approximately 9:00 this morning Baton Rouge Police officers and East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a shooting incident on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway. Multiple officers from both agencies sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
Please be advised Airline Highway both lanes is currently shut down from Goodwood to Old Hammond. Old Hammond is closed to Tara Boulevard. At this point in time the scene is still active. We are advising the public to please take an alternate route and steer clear of the area. Those in the area are asked to remain indoors and contact law enforcement immediately if they see anything suspicious.
Two of the officers killed were from the Baton Rouge police, and the third was an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s deputy, Baton Rouge Chief Administrative Officer William Daniel said earlier, as cited by The Advocate.
There is still an active shooting scene near the B-Quick Convenience Store on Airline Highway, according to Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesperson.
The scene is still active, but contained, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said earlier. She added that one gunman has been killed, and police believe two more shooters may be at large.
WAFB said that the shootout began in the early hours of Sunday morning on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway in Baton Rouge, less than one mile from police headquarters. The incident reportedly took place at Hammond Aire Shopping Center.
Police reportedly have no clear picture on what started the shooting, but it seems there was a running gun fight in the area of the shopping center and convenience store. They were first notified of the incident at about 8:45 a.m. Sunday.
Baton Rouge police responded to a call reporting a “suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle,” a CNN source said, adding that the person opened fire as soon as the police squad arrived.
So, was this a planned attack on police? We may know soon as the investigation continues.
This is a good time to revisit our post about the great video in support of our folks in blue, “Dear Officer, I see You.”
